Library [06/13]

The books were more or less in a state of half-decent organization, with the exception of whatever happened to look interesting in the mechanics section, today. Pearl Jam was playing relatively quietly on the stereo, and the faint odour of burning sulphur drifted lazily throughout the library as today's library aide contented himself to sit at the desk and read.

Must be a Sunday.

The nosepoke made her laugh and reach up to lightly swat his hand away.

"I know," she said. "I don't know why. It's not even like I'm doing anything more interesting than selling mangoes and arguing with my laundry, are you?"

//Not particularly,// Jono admitted. //My bandages attempted to murder me in my sleep the other day, but that's about it.//

They didn't have much luck in their efforts to smother him, but they'd tried. Oh, they'd tried.

//I think this means that we're pretty much obligated to do something, doesn't it?//

"How'd you get away from them?" Didi asked. "Hmmm. Do I want to do something with my boyfriend ... I think I have to say yes."

//I didn't get away from them,// Jono replied. //I threw them into a basin of water, and then put them on, still wet.//

It had been... uncomfortable. There had been a lot of steam.

//Tonight? Tomorrow night? After work on Tuesday? Soon?//

Stop sounding desperate, Jono.

"Like a steam bath?" Didi groused. Probably good for your skin ... she shook it off.

"And I am free anytime. If we do tomorrow, there's no chance either of us will get stuck in the shop." Because they both worked so hard. "Got something in mind?"

//In mind? Not particularly,// Jono admitted. //Was there anything you had yer heart set on? Walk along th'beach? Taking in a film at th'cinema in town? There are swings at th'park...//

Ariel had actually managed to get him to swing, on said swings. He was never going to admit that he'd enjoyed doing so. So there.

"In this weather?" Didi said. "Beach, definitely. How'd you find out the park has swings? That could be fun too."

//I was just out walking,// Jono admitted. //I'm the only boy in my cabin and I needed to get out before I could get the urge to put ribbons in my hair or somesuch. And I noticed my little sibling this term was there.//

Swinging. Of course.

//I suppose here's where I admit that I don't actually have any swim gear t'my name anymore.//

"I suppose this is where I point out I'm not exactly shocked," Didi said (she'd deal with the ribbons thing in a second. "We said walk, right? Walk doesn't mean swimming unless you want it to."

"... also, you'd look cute with barrettes."

//In the heat we've been having lately? I'm almost tempted, to say I want it to,// Jono admitted. Being on fire did not lend itself very well to balmy summer temperatures, particularly when one was used to the weather in London.

//And barrettes? I suppose some little yellow ones with glittery butterflies on them, hm?//

... No, Jono.

Really, do you still think it's a good idea to give Didi ideas like that?

"We probably have some like that at the store," she said immediately. "Maybe with ribbons attached."

//Right, then. Butterfly barrettes and swim trunks,// Jono mused. //It sounds to me almost as though I've got a bit of a shopping list, now.//

... The thing was, he'd let Didi put cute clips and things into his hair. Simply on the grounds that she was Didi, and he was an absolute pushover.

Didi knew that, and that was behind a lot of the love in her eyes as she looked at him and reached to touch his hair. "Only if you want to," she said. "If you want to leave on leather pants and not let me touch your hair, we can have fun that way, too. But I'm having fun just visiting you at work."

//I'll have you know,// Jono pointed out, leaning forward a little more because he just so happened to like it when her hands were in his hair, //that it's entirely too bloody hot to go running around the island in leather, lately.//

Yeah. He was going to be investing in jeans and t-shirts, at this rate. And that would be weird.

"And a cabin full of girls probably means you aren't sitting around in bandages and boxers either," Didi noted, and scrunched the chestnut locks through her fingers a bit. "So ... your wardrobe leaves something to be desired, hmmm."

Didi did not get hot wearing black jeans all summer long. This might have been an Endless thing; it was more likely a case of mind over matter.

Jono would even be more comfortable in black jeans, really. The added trouble with black leather was that not only did it absorb heat, but it absolutely did not breathe.

//A bit,// he allowed. //I absolutely destroyed a pair of trousers last week. Who knew you weren't supposed to go wading in the ocean in them, right?//

Well, Jono had known. But it had been a million freaking degrees in the shade, that day.

Didi gave him a look that asked whether he was kidding or just stupid. "I'm going to assume that's a rhetorical question," she said. "'Cause ... I think pretty much everyone knows not to get leather wet."

//I practically had to cut my way out of them with scissors at the end of the day,// Jono shared. //And it was entirely worth it.//

So, yes. Pretty rhetorical.

".... and you didn't ask me for help?" Didi asked, since it was pretty much mandated with that set-up line. "You wound me, Starsmore."

//Well, if we weren't in th'cabins at the time, I might have made a special pit-stop for just such an occasion,// he replied, lightly. //But I'll tell you what, luv. Th'next time I feel it to be absolutely necessary to ruin some of my best clothing, I'll make certain to do so when we're in th'dorms, and when Jak is off on a mission of some sort in Haven.//

He was pretty much going to make a point of this now, you realize.

"Thank you," Didi said primly. "Do that, and I'll send Jaime off to visit Dinah, or whatever he's doing."

She arced an eyebrow sympathetically. "Were they really one of your best pairs?"

//They were,// Jono agreed, his tone carrying a hint of a sigh along with it. //Unfortunately. They fit just so, right up until I got fed up with th'heat and made my way into th'water like a total twonk.//

Again, it had been absolutely worthwhile.

//So... Time for actual swim trunks. It's not even July yet. I can't imagine it'll get much more pleasant from here.//

"Maybe a really good tailor could rescue them?" Didi suggested, without much force behind it. "Or we could turn into a nudist camp for the rest of the summer, but that's ... not really your thing."

It really, really, really wasn't his thing. But he gave her a look that said that he was thankful for the suggestion, at least.

//Nudist from th'waist down,// he mused. //It'll be some sort of movement, perhaps. A revolution. 'Down with pants.'//

Pants in both the American and British sense, in this case.

"It'd make Alex Karev happy?" Didi offered. "Though not as happy as topless day, but ... y'know. Beggars shouldn't be choosers."

No, she didn't really care what Alex thought, but this was a silly conversation.
