First Aid - Danger Shop, Friday, Period 5 [Week 5]

The Danger Shop this week was set up like a doctor's waiting room. Hawkeye was sitting in one corner, feet up on the chair opposite him.

"Take a seat. Not that one. Even the computer couldn't get the stains out of that chair. Welcome to my former haunting grounds in Crabapple Cove, Maine. This week was going to be about burns, stings and shocks, but I'd like to believe you have enough common sense to use what you learned about wounds and CPR to treat anything basic enough for you to do something about it.

Every day working here was a dream compared to working as part of a MASH unit. That's what they called them - Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. What it meant was a few throw-together buildings and a group of tents passing for a hospital with not enough supplies, not enough personnel and too many patients. Whenever a patient walked through this door here, I usually knew what the problem was. Gastro. Athlete's foot. The occasional bout of measles or Mr Jenkins breaking his ankle for the fifteenth time because he fell off a ladder cleaning his roof instead of letting the neighborhood kids do it for him.

At the MASH, half the time I knew what I was doing, the other half I didn't have a clue and had to make it up and hope that someone didn't die. I can't tell you the number of times one of my patients struck it lucky because someone within jeep or chopper distance knew what to do and could come in to save the day. Every time, I remember thinking 'What if someone had told me how to do that? That kid might keep his arm.' But this class isn't about me. It's about you.

So today we have a change of plans. We're going to learn what you want to learn. Brainstorm. Think about what you want to get out of this workshop. Draw on personal experience or personal fears. What's something you want to walk out of here at the end of the term knowing?"

Alex didn't pass any notes (not really his thing) but he did relax in his chair, listening to the lecture while his mind wandered to what he might want to learn.

Hiccup listened and thought, sitting there in his extrememly clean (and slightly damp) clothes, idly stacking the coloured wooden blocks, one on top of the other.

Cara gave every appearance of listening intently, the only indication she might have had slightly more ale than was good for her last class was a slight relaxing of posture.

Ellie was listening, but she was also thinking about what she wanted to learn most.

Sookie tried to listen, she really did, but she was so distracted by the weekend ahead of her and what her brother had gotten himself into that she was having a rough time.

There was something Hiccup did want to learn, as it turned out. "What can you do about frostbite?" he asked. "Apart from wait for someone's toe to fall off, that is, because they're generally not too happy about that."

"It gets pretty cold. I think the refrigerators here are warmer than room temperature in winter." Hiccup had his head down, because he was writing down everything Hawkeye said, nodding as he did so. This was going to be really useful.

"This is going to be really useful," he said as he looked up. "Ah," he glanced at the door, considering the invitation, "I think I'm good for today, thanks."

Sookie actually perked up to listen to the explanation given to Hiccup (learning about what the cold could do to her was close to her personal interests, after all) before asking her own question. "How do you treat blood loss, normally? How do you know when it's too late?"

She really didn't want to ever have an experience like last weekend, again, but if she did, she wanted to know how to fix it without a handy vampire.

Jono shifted his weight uneasily, and then decided to just go for bloody broke and ask, already.

//How about particularly serious burns, then,// he asked, once his own turn rolled around. It was entirely possible that he'd been inspired by Hiccup's request to learn about dealing with frostbite.

No, he really didn't have any personal reasons for being interested in that particular topic, why?

Alice was here. Looking quite thoughtful. Wondering if fire prevention was beyond the scope of this assignment.
