First Aid - Danger Shop, Friday, Period 5 [Week 5]

The Danger Shop this week was set up like a doctor's waiting room. Hawkeye was sitting in one corner, feet up on the chair opposite him.

"Take a seat. Not that one. Even the computer couldn't get the stains out of that chair. Welcome to my former haunting grounds in Crabapple Cove, Maine. This week was going to be about burns, stings and shocks, but I'd like to believe you have enough common sense to use what you learned about wounds and CPR to treat anything basic enough for you to do something about it.

Every day working here was a dream compared to working as part of a MASH unit. That's what they called them - Mobile Army Surgical Hospital. What it meant was a few throw-together buildings and a group of tents passing for a hospital with not enough supplies, not enough personnel and too many patients. Whenever a patient walked through this door here, I usually knew what the problem was. Gastro. Athlete's foot. The occasional bout of measles or Mr Jenkins breaking his ankle for the fifteenth time because he fell off a ladder cleaning his roof instead of letting the neighborhood kids do it for him.

At the MASH, half the time I knew what I was doing, the other half I didn't have a clue and had to make it up and hope that someone didn't die. I can't tell you the number of times one of my patients struck it lucky because someone within jeep or chopper distance knew what to do and could come in to save the day. Every time, I remember thinking 'What if someone had told me how to do that? That kid might keep his arm.' But this class isn't about me. It's about you.

So today we have a change of plans. We're going to learn what you want to learn. Brainstorm. Think about what you want to get out of this workshop. Draw on personal experience or personal fears. What's something you want to walk out of here at the end of the term knowing?"
