Self Defense and Kickassery for Dummies; Thursday Fifth Period [5th. Class]
Danger Shop, Fifth Period. The dojo was back.
Faith wasn't getting into any fight with muscular guys that day. It had been fun, but don't push it. She looked pretty serious and professional for once, and maybe a little smug- she was always a little smug, but this time there was something else going on. But, until the class started, she just stood there, hands on her hips as she watched the students arrive one by one. Or two by two, or three by three, you get the point. Each and everyone got their respective glance, but besides that, silence. It was a funny excercise that, imposing silence on the "classroom" until she decided to start; when you don't talk, you end up thinking about the stuff you try to cover with noise, whether you like it or not. It also built character, maybe. Probably.
But hey, it was time for classes.
"Four classes", started as she walked around the group, hands still on her hips. "When I started this thing, I had serious doubts about going anywhere, honest. Yet in some little time I think the results have been pretty damn good." And if not, she had seen everyone giving their best to take part of every class, every excercise, every kata and so on. "I'm sort of proud", added a moment later, half grin showing as she resumed her position in front of the class. "While I don't expect you guys to go out there and save the world, I'm pretty damn sure you now can stand on your own, or at least have the guts to know when to run." She didn't like the idea, but she wasn't about to lie them and tell them they were awesome fighters now; the truth was pretty okay though.
"Today we'll see Kumite. Kumite means sparring, and is one of the three main sections of karate training, along with kata and kihon, which we have already revised. Kumite is the part of karate in which you train against an adversary, using the techniques learned from the kihon and kata. In our case, we also get the upper hand from already having seen jiu jitsu and judo; if you have gone through them every week you will find yourselves to be highly resourceful in a violent encounter, even when your opponent is clearly stronger. Kumite can be used to develop a particular technique or a skill, such as effectively judging and adjusting your distance from your opponent, or it can be done in competition; this is what most people think when they hear of Karate; the tournaments, the fights, when it's only but a piece of something way bigger." But they weren't in some sassy class, so Faith cut it there.
"So today we'll be going over the things we've seen so far, and apply Kumite. We are going to do some sparring, or, to put it better, you are going to spar with me again." She felt it was time to get sore again, figures. "Well then, let's get this party started."
