"Hello, mateys!" Jack greeted the class cheerfully from where he sat on a fruit crate. "Today we're going to talk of foragin' on your new island, otherwise known as 'How hungry will you be before you eat a durian?'"

He held up the fruit, which ~~smelled like shit. No, really~~ emitted a pungent aroma. He swung his hand around at the coconuts, crabs (which were trying to escape), mangos, and papayas.

And then at the crude spears he'd fashioned. "Or you can try to catch yourself a sea turtle," he said with a laugh, "but that's high level pirating there."

Or wonder who let one rip.

Well, first you must figure out how to get into the food--there is a sad lack of machetes available.

After all that hard work of killing crabs (or releasing them into the ocean to reunite with their crab relatives, if that's more your political leaning)!

Who's munching on durian.

They're putting in a new furnace system today (mm, home ownership), so I'll pick up tags around 4 pm.

Helen wasn't about to try the smelly thing, but the other fruit looked good. She looked around for something to open them with, then sighed and shifted her right hand into a sharp knife and sliced them open.

The crabs she'd be setting free back into the ocean.

Coconuts were an incredibly rare delicacy in Christian's London, but they were still the most familiar (and, he dared say, delectable) foodstuff on display. He took one, shook it to make sure it was still good, and started throwing it against the rocks. Sooner or later, it would have to crack.

Tim found a sharp rock and used it to cut through the skin of a mango.

I love Bourdain's description of durian's smell. "Your breath will smell as if you'd been French-kissing your dead grandmother."

Kate found a useful looking rock, then proceeded to try to smash a coconut open with it, with a look of great concentration on her face.

She wasn't touching the crabs, by the way. She wanted nothing at all to do with them, dead or alive.

Yeah, after all that hard work with the coconut, Kate was just going to be over here, sprawling like a sprawly thing.

Tanning was fun, even if she seemed to be pretty unsuccessful at it.

Ugh god durian is the worst smelling thing ever. SO SO NASTY.

Makita took one of the spears Jack had fashioned, breaking off the spearhead and using that to saw her mango in half. She could scoop out the interior with her makeshift blade as she liked; the crabs would require getting a fire started to boil them, and Maki didn't feel like making the effort today.

Delirium

Hmmm, Durian.

What? Is not like Del even needed to eat in the first place, so going for the weirdest choice was only logical. Kinda.

She was eyeing the crabs too.

Kurt already smelled faintly like the durians anyway. Or, at least, like burning sulfur, which was almost as bad.

And if people actually ate them, then they must therefore taste better than they smelled -- it only made sense. So he grabbed up one of the turtle-hunting spears and used it to pry open the fruit. "Pee-yooo! Stinky!!!"

It actually was pretty good.

While the other students worked on their tans, Kurt worked on carrying the crabs to the water and trying to shoo away any sea turtles he saw.

How can they possibly even THINK about eating the crabs if they don't have any Old Bay?
