Ocker 101 - fourth period - week four [4/06]
Class today was in the cafeteria kitchen. Mick had talked the office staff into letting his class handwavily know. When his class arrived, they'd find him standing between two tables. One was covered with a canvas tarp. One was covered with...probably just think of them as objects. Some of them were still moving.
"G'day. Thing about the bush, thing about lots of places, is they look dead. You get stuck somewhere and you think you're gonna starve. You're wrong. There's more tucker out there than you can poke a stick at. You just gotta know where to look." Mick gave an overview of how to find bush tucker, and a bit about surviving in the Outback.
"Now's your chance to give bush tucker a go without havin' to look for it." He explained what the objects were and then waved his students over. "Go on, give it a try, 'specially the honey ants." He pointed at them. "Just bite the end off. They're real sweet, fellas back home love 'em."
Mick gave them a little while, and when he was satisfied they were done, resumed speaking. "Now, the other important thing to remember is that you can live on bush tucker, but it tastes like shit." He grinned and pulled the cover off the table, revealing not a table but a long grill, long enough for all of them to work at together, and opened one of the fridges to reveal all sorts ofmoddable meat, fish and veges. "Even got a stool for the little fella." He nodded at Robin if he was there. "Don't want you falling in and lighting yourself on fire." Mick flicked on the gas, lit the grill, and stepped back. "This is a tradition back home. Gotta know how to use a barbie and the best way to learn is to have a go."
Before the students left, Mick told them, "Next week we're gonna pay a visit to my old wateringhole, so meet me at the end of the Causeway."
