MATHS CLASSES: Friday 21.10

Charlie's desk is overflowing with papers today, and two of the blackboards are covered with x, y, brackets, equal signs and exclaimation points. Charlie seems a little frustrated but mostly cheerful. He tells you that he's moved his office hours to Tuesdays, and that four consecutive classes missed without an excuse now equals being kicked out of class. He then gives you a sheet of paper and tell you to go sit down.

A fox is a farmer's worst enemy.

Angelus hands in a piece of paper by the end of class which reads:

He takes the chicken first. Next he goes back and picks up the fox. He takes the fox over and brings the chicken back. He leaves the chicken on the first side and takes the corn over. He leaves the corn with the fox then goes back and gets the chicken.

You're thinking of how a chicken is David Boreanaz's worst enemy

[ooc: No worries. He had things to do for Ethics class and such anyway, so it's all good.]

Han shakes his head. Granddad had taught him this one with mavir, a nerf and a ferl.

"The man takes the chicken across, leaving the fox and the grain. (Fox and grain on side 1, chicken on 2)
He brings the grain across and takes the chicken back. (Fox 1, Grain 2, chicken in boat)
He leaves the chicken and brings the ferl fox across. (Chicken 1, Fox & grain 2)
He makes a last trip and brings the chicken across."

As he turns in the paper, Han gives a wry smile. "He needs a bigger boat."

Kawalsky works it out in a couple of minutes because it's a practical problem and hands in this (http://tinypic.com/estevp.jpg).

Kawalsky grinned. He liked this math class a lot better than the last one.

Anders stares at the paper for a long time, but his brain just isn't here today.

Finally, miserably, he scrawls "I don't know" across the bottom of the page and bolts out the door as soon as it touches Charlie's desk.

::watches Anders run off, closes her eyes tightly, takes a deep breath before opening them again, and goes after him::

Hey... wait up.

Oh, hey . . . there you are. *smiles weakly* You okay?

[OOC: Must go have lunch now. Back in a bit.]

Yeah, I'm doin' alright, I guess. How're you?

[ooc: no probs. I should take care of other things, too.]

*shrugs* Okay, I guess. Still kinda confused.

First he takes the chicken. Then he goes back and takes the fox over, and brings the chicken back. He leaves the chicken and takes the corn. The corn and the fox can be left together, so he leaves them on the other side and goes back for the chicken.

(Alternately, eat the chicken and let the fox swim)

Jack takes a few minutes trying to figure this one out before it hits him.

"He takes the chicken over and then he takes the fox but brings back the chicken and takes the corn and then comes back for the chicken again. Wait. No, yeah that's right. Why isn't he worried about anyone stealing any of it though?"

Take the Chicken over, go back, take the fox, and then bring the chicken back, then take the corn over, go back, bring the chicken over.

::Cally then adds some footnotes::

Of course you could just drown the fox, and then take things over one at a time. Chicken, Dead Fox, and then Corn. The problem doesn't say they have to be alive on the other side.

::sighs, and turns in the paper::

Lily turns in her solution at the end of class.

1. Take the Chicken over
2. Go back by self
3. Take the fox over, bring the chicken back (leaving fox alone)
4. Take the corn over (leaving chicken alone)
5. Go back by self
6. Bring the chicken over.

Alanna tries not to burst out laughing when she reads the problem. She quickly writes down the correct solution.
