Being Marooned [Thursday, June 3]

"Today we shall Make Fire!" Jack announced, lifting his arms over his head dramatically. "And when we make fire, children, we do not--repeat, do not use rum to do it. Rum is for drinking! Rum is not for igniting large bonfires so your fiance in the British naval vessel will find you and rescue you only to break his heart into tiny pieces."

God, he missed her.

"Anyway!" he continued. "You take a bit of twine like so, and a stick like this, and you do this," he said, and demonstrated how to make fire.

See? He was quite handy!

"Or you can use a lighter," he said, "but most pirates will make sure to check you for useful bits and bobs before making you walk the plank."

He pointed to the beach. "Make yourself a campfire, then set it alight. And remember: NO USING RUM."

Because that part was the most important.

Lion-o dutifully gathered up some sticks and twine. Even though he seemed to be struggling to get his fire started, he wasn't about to ask for a lighter. There were times when you couldn't rely on having tools available, and he wanted to be prepared for such a situation.

Leda tried it the way he demonstrated, but when she got frustrated, she cast a fire spell at the tinder and cheated.

Christian gathered a few sticks, then looked about for anyone who might have a match.

Helen sighed and turned her right arm into a hard piece of flint which she struck at with a rock until she got a spark to light the twine and fuzz to make a fire. Really. As if she hadn't done this a hundred times before.

Kurt tried the sticks and twine, he really did. He spent forever at it, and it just wasn't WORKING for him.

So instead, he decided to make fire the PIRATE way -- he teleported over to Jack's fire and grabbed for a flaming stick.

This time Del was just chilling on the sand, making sand angels and wondering what Marooned meant.

Maybe it had to do with small dogs stuffed in fancy bags.
