Library [06/02]

Once the library was set up for the day, Sam went into list-making mode. One set of lists was everything he planned on taking with him to New York vs. what he was going to leave at the house vs. what he was going to throw out or give away. Then came the lists of what was going to get packed together (to lead to the fewest amount of boxes possible, of course), and then the lists of what he was going to bring to New York when he visited Peter vs. what he'd be bringing when he actually moved. That list was mostly books; hopefully Peter wasn't kidding about putting up more bookshelves for him or they were going to be tripping over Sam's collection in every room.

"The cabins aren't so bad. I mean, compared to what I'm used to, not the palaces you're used to, I guess," Sam said. "And it's better without all the baggage taking up space."

"They're gross. Not that the dorms are much better," Chuck said. "At least I think my room would have been able to handle all my baggage. I couldn't even get into my alcove on Friday."

"I don't want to think about what kind of baggage I might have seen if I'd had a whole room to fill up," Sam said. "What I got was bad enough."

"I wasn't surprised by anything I got. I know I'm screwed up," Chuck said with an easy shrug. "There was just some stuff in there that I didn't want people coming across."

"Yeah, it was the fact that everyone could see what was written that was hard," Sam said. "And the fact that it made me feel more screwed up than I actually am. Do you think Dean and I are codependent?"

"Yes," Chuck said without hesitation. "Extremely. I thought this was common knowledge."

Sam frowned at Chuck and almost looked offended. "We're not--we've been apart for a whole year and neither one of us wasted away." Clearly, that meant they were fine.

"I think you're taking the definition of codependent a little too literally," Chuck said. "What's the big deal? It's not that surprising."

"Well the baggage made it sound like a bad thing," Sam protested. "I just don't think of us like that. I mean yeah, we're close, but not in a bad way."

"Yeah," Chuck said, rubbing the back of his neck. He could definitely see how it could go wrong. "I mean, I'm not exactly a proponent of being close with people, but you're fine with it."

"You're doing a lot better at being close to people than you used to," Sam said. "For the record."

"Thanks," he said, with a slight smirk. "I'm sure I'll live to regret it one day."

Well that was a pessimist for you.

Sam rolled his eyes. "Yeah, keeping people close to help you out when you're in trouble is a terrible idea."

"You know, I managed to get out of trouble before I met you people," Chuck told him.

"But did you get into more or less trouble to begin with?" Sam asked.

"Depends. I do pass out in public less," Chuck allowed. "But on the other hand, I die more."

"Hey, that's the island's doing, not me," Sam said. Except for that one time when he was a vampire, but that wasn't really Chuck. "If I had my way, you wouldn't die at all."

"Oh thanks. That means a lot," he said, smirking. "I'd prefer it if you stayed alive too."

"Hey, that's my plan too. Alive and, you know, not evil." Stupid destiny crap.

"That's a good idea," Chuck said with a nod. "It really wasn't a good look on you."

"I thought you liked the white suit?" Sam said, feeling like of proud of himself for being able to joke about his time as Lucifer.

"Oh, believe me, it was an improvement to what you normally wear," Chuck said, looking Sam over. "But I look better in a white suit."

"At least I know it's possible for me to fit into a suit like that. So, that's a start," Sam said. "I thought if I grew more, I was going to have to settle for short pants or something."

"If you settled for that I think I'd have to stop seeing you in public," Chuck said. "We'd have to have secret rendezvous in places nobody knows me."

"At least until Gossip Girl caught you," Sam said with a laugh. "Or until you found a tailor to fix me."
