Friday Ethics Class #2, 8-10am

Tara looks excited, as students trickle in, bouncing slightly on the balls of her feet.

"Okay, we've got a lot to get through today. Two announcements to start:

First, Teacher's Assistants have been chosen. I have a carrot - Major K! - and a stick - Angelus. If you're having trouble grasping a concept, talk to Major K!. He'll guide you through the thinking. If you think you've got a hold on it, talk to Angelus. He'll challenge your thinking, give you the opportunity to clarify your position.

Second, and related to the latter - this class is not an easy A. At some point in this course you will find yourself challenged and confronted. For many of you, that will be today. If you walk out of this classroom before class is over, and without checking it with me, I may be understandably upset. However, I recognise that if you get angry or upset, you may need some time alone, or away from the group. To that end, I present to you the Emo Closet Time Out Room." She walks to the back of the classroom and opens the door to what previously was a supply cabinet. Inside is what looks very much like a white padded room. "This room is soundproofed. You can cry, scream and punch things all you want, and I will not penalise you for leaving the class or the discussion. Major K! or I will come to check on anyone who goes to the Emo Closet Time Out Room, in case you need help or support. Feel free to tell us to leave you alone.

Now, we've got our first debate to hear, a discussion topic to... um, discuss, and your first out of class assignment. Which you are going to kill, or at least seriously maim, me for giving you.

The second the door closes, Callisto aims a blow at Angelus's gut.

"The only reason you're not already dust is because I gave my word to hear you out. Start explaining. Now."

"Ow!" he clutched his stomach, glaring at her lustfully "Do you want an easy A or don't you?"

Callisto practically spits the words out. "How, exactly, is being your slave an easy A? 'Daddy.'"

"Because if I'm in charge of you then I could order you to do nothing at all," Angelus said. "Hell, I could even set you free. If you were in charge of somebody else you'd have to keep on top of them and write a report. Slave to somebody else and you're at their whim. Drop the project entirely and Maclay will make you write a detailed paper explaining why.

"On the other hand, stick with me - " he shrugged, grinning as much as he could over the stomach pain 'cause ow " - and we can spend our time sitting on the sidelines, eating popcorn, enjoying the chaos, and you don't have to lift a finger. Easy A."

"A slave in name only is still a slave. I will not submit my will to anyone." Callisto looks like she's debating whether to hit the wall or Angelus. "Not even for an 'easy A'."

"Fine," Angelus said. "Then I'll set you free. Wouldn't hate the company with the popcorn, but it's not a requirement."

Callisto suddenly cocks her head to the side as if she's just thought of something and grins. "Oh, I have a much better idea."

Angelus looked at her suspiciously. "What?"

Callisto continues grinning. "I won't be your slave, but I will be your accomplice. Since I assume the point of this exercise is to 'show the true nature of slavery' by all means, let's give them a show. We're going to do the assignment. We're going to do it properly. Follow every single rule, obey every single edict. But only, only in public. "

A slow grin spread across his face.

"I knew you wouldn't let me down except for that moment of doubt just now because, again, ow," he said. "Go on. Tell me more."

"I know how real slaves act, far too well. I'm willing to play, again only in public, the 'good little slave', in all it's passive-agressive glory, and I'm willing to teach my fellow slaves how to do so as well."

Angelus looked skyward. "Thank you God. I was starting to despair that nobody in this class would figure something like that out. Christ, I practically wrote it down for them in the margins. What do you need me to do?"

"I'm property. Treat me like it, within the strictures of the assignment, of course. Although, I feel I must reiterate once more, only in public.

"Sadly, this does mean no flirting or subtext of any kind, after all you don't need to flirt with property.

"Also, encourage the masters to act similarly, to all the slaves, even if they have come to some sort of arrangement with their own. Slaves are possessions, and you don't make friends with other peoples belongings. Tell them they'll score extra credit for accuaracy or something if they object."

"I'll see what I can do," Angelus said. "Sadly most are too busy making a Noble Stand - " the sarcastic use of capital letters could be heard in his tone " - to bother to actually think about the assignment. Because, of course, rhetoric is so much more useful than action."

He rolled his eyes.

"I'll follow your lead. I've got one request of my own."

"If you have go to with something for the show, go with 'sir'," Angelus said. "Or my name. I do answer to that too. Or hey baby but you just said no subtext"

"How do you want me to handle things like taking care of you?" Angelus stepped closer, now that he trusted she wasn't going to slug him again. "I actually tend to be very nice about that, if my accomplace is worthy. Soundproof walls too. Just saying."

"I'm sure I'll think of something." Callisto smirked and raised an eyebrow. "Flowers are always nice. Those might be useful."

"I can do flowers," Angelus said. "How about food? Is there a restaurant in town that you like? Soft, too. In case someone was pressed up against them for some reason."

"Haven't really checked any out. Not much of a foodie. Back home isn't exactly the height of culture and sophistication. Nifty. Even though I can't possibly think of a reason someone might be pressed against them."
