Rookiehood 101, Tuesday, Period 4

"Yo, Rookies!" Hark, was that the territorial call of the wild Reno in his natural habitat? Oh, it totally was. "Bit of a change of pace for you this week, yo. When this period ends, you're all on a mission, yo. This week, I ain't gonna be the teacher."

He smirked, and then set out on that slow, deliberate saunter of his, walking paces back and forth in front of the class.

"Half of you are. And half of you are gonna be the rookies. All you teachers? It's gonna be your job to look out for the rookies this week. Rookies? It's your job to be... rookies. Make like you don't know nothin'. Give your teacher a rough time, yo. Do whatever it is you figure rookies do."

He nodded at the board, where he'd scrawled out the names of the two groups.

"Today, just pair off, figure out what it is you're gonna be rookies at. You can teach and learn just about anything, but be prepared to tell me next week what it was you did and how it went, yo. Teachers? Word of advice? Just because you got some theoretical kinda power right now don't mean you get to abuse it. If you're gonna tell 'em to run laps around the island, you damn well better be prepared to run 'em too. And you better be better at it. They ain't gonna respect you if you don't come off as competent, yo. They're your rookies, so it's up to you to set an example, here."

He smirked, and then waved his hands at the class.

"Go on, get to it. Don't let me keep you waitin', yo."

"If this assignment was the other way around, I might ask you how to teach me to do that," Tahiri noted ruefully. (Like she minded nerds. She hung around people who disassembled intricate machinery for fun.) "Just about everything I can think of to teach has to do with either fighting or survival."

Or both. Sometimes they were connected. Imagine that.

"Well that's always useful," Dan said, thinking that this was going to all end with a girl kicking his ass. "I didn't get into too many fights back home but things around here can get...weird. It's probably a useful skill to have if I'm gonna be here for a few more years."

"Around Fandom, it's never a bad idea," Tahiri agreed. "Because saying it can get weird is like saying Mon Calamari is just a little bit damp."

Tahiri, use figures of speech that make sense to other people, please.

She scratched at the side of her neck idly. "It's only a week, so I wouldn't go betting on you taking on a small army single-handed by the end of it, but I could show you a few tricks?"

"That would work," Dan said with a nod. "There's not too many small armies in Brooklyn. Just...gangs."

Tahiri at least had the vague idea that Brooklyn was somewhere in New York, but that made her think of the underlevels of Coruscant, and now she was imagining it as some district below the subways.

She kind of wanted to ask Dan if it was an adjustment to living aboveground. Amazingly, she didn't.

"So, the sort of thing where you want to get them to leave you alone if there's trouble, more than trying to clean them up all on your own."

That last part had only barely occurred to her. Kriffing Jedi.

Dan nodded. "Yeah, that would be for the best. I think if I tried to play hero I'd end up dead."

At least he knew his limits, which was more than you could say for most people around here.

Like oh, say, Tahiri. If she knew her limits, she might not end up getting knocked unconscious so much. But pfft, logic.

"Okay," she said, relieved. "We can do that. I've got reserves this afternoon and a class on Thursday morning, but other than that, I'm free whenever."

"I've got class on Friday but I'm free any other time." That's because you didn't have a life, Dan. "You're not going to make fun of me if I really suck at this, are you?"

"Almost everyone I know at home is better than me at this," Tahiri assured him. That probably sounded more reassuring without the context of everyone she knew at home being ridiculously good at this. "No making fun of you, promise."

Which did not rule out some sarcasm on her part, no.
