"Yo, Rookies!" Hark, was that the territorial call of the wild Reno in his natural habitat? Oh, it totally was. "Bit of a change of pace for you this week, yo. When this period ends, you're all on a mission, yo. This week, I ain't gonna be the teacher."

He smirked, and then set out on that slow, deliberate saunter of his, walking paces back and forth in front of the class.

"Half of you are. And half of you are gonna be the rookies. All you teachers? It's gonna be your job to look out for the rookies this week. Rookies? It's your job to be... rookies. Make like you don't know nothin'. Give your teacher a rough time, yo. Do whatever it is you figure rookies do."

He nodded at the board, where he'd scrawled out the names of the two groups.

"Today, just pair off, figure out what it is you're gonna be rookies at. You can teach and learn just about anything, but be prepared to tell me next week what it was you did and how it went, yo. Teachers? Word of advice? Just because you got some theoretical kinda power right now don't mean you get to abuse it. If you're gonna tell 'em to run laps around the island, you damn well better be prepared to run 'em too. And you better be better at it. They ain't gonna respect you if you don't come off as competent, yo. They're your rookies, so it's up to you to set an example, here."

He smirked, and then waved his hands at the class.

"Go on, get to it. Don't let me keep you waitin', yo."

... it was kinda funny how that made the whole week look that much better.

"It's a good choice," she admitted, "since I don't know how 'less I'm using the staff Liir gave me."

A beat.

"I'd make a kick-ass Jedi, though. Just so you know."

Ben smirked. "Maybe, but not in seven days. And I'm not letting you touch my lightsaber."

"Diiirty," she teased, because that was far too easy of an opening to not. "Tsk tsk, look at you. Setting a bad example."

Ben blushed. "Not like that!" he flailed.

You'd think by now he'd remember about the lightsaber euphemisms...

Oh, he was too easy.

She gave him wide empty eyes. "How'd you mean it then?" Ino chirped.

Yes, she already knew. Yes, she was just giving Ben a hard time.

As was right and proper for any apprentice. Their job was to give their teacher gray hairs.

Or at least that was what Ben believed.

"My Jedi weapon," he mumbled, still blushing. And not really clarifying matters, if we're being honest.

"Oooooh," she said, eyes widening even further. "Your weapon."

Mmm innuendo.

"Shhhh," Ben said, turning crimson.

She just laughed. He was sooo easy.

"So 'bout flying," she said, to prompt him out of the blushing thing. "What kind of flyin' do you mean, oh mentory one?"

"I have a shuttle parked down on the beach," he offered. "We can go into space where there's very little to hit, or I can try to finagle the flight shed keys away from my grandfather."

"We could do both?" she wheedled. "I learn fast."

... Though the 'very little to hit' option was probably a good place to start. Ino had never controlled anything more complicated than a bumper car and those, well, were meant to be used crash into people.

"Let's try the flight shed first," Ben said. "That way if you explode, it's rebootable."

Ben remembered some of his first lessons well.

"I can think of a few people who'd object to my being permanently exploded," she noted.

A beat.

"And you'd be the worst mentor ever if that happened."

She probably shouldn't have sounded so chipper about that considering it was her theoretical death at hand.

"If it's your fault that you blew up, then no," Ben decided. "But if it's my fault you didn't learn correctly, I might crack the top ten of worst mentors."

He still listed "torturing your apprentice for two days while extolling the virtues of the Sith lifestyle" as worse than a death.

Well. Yes.

But it wasn't like Ino was really being serious.

She shrugged. "You'd still be at fault, a bit," she pointed out, "as a mentor is supposed to stop the mentee from crap like that. S'why they're not left on their own."

Ben grinned. "Well, maybe where you come from. My first teacher was a little more hardcore."

And also evil. Don't forget evil.

She resisted the urge to argue the point with him there. It would only end badly.

... He was lucky his Rookie was restraining her tongue.

"Maybe maybe," she said, shrugging. "When's good for you, for trainin'?"

"I'm completely done with classes for the week after tomorrow afternoon," he said. "You?"

"Got work at Wellspring tomorrow," she said, humming thoughtfully. "Other than that I'm free far as I know."

"Want to meet up on Thursday?" he suggested. "I only have my weekly spar with Granddad and that's really early in the morning."

"That would be acceptable," she said loftily.

A beat.

"But, tip: if you're going to mentor someone you've gotta be the boss. Don't ask when's good for the minion 'cause the minion ain't supposed to get a say." She considered that and shrugged.

If he couldn't figure out that bossing her around was only going to lead to her being a brat at him, well, that experience was valuable too, right?

Ben shrugged. "It never hurts to be polite initially."
