Blending In, Wednesday, Period 6

When the students arrived today, they would find themselves in a regular classroom setting - regular except for the strange-smelling buffet at the front of the room.

"If you are traveling around the world in this day and age, you would be hard pressed to find a place that did not have a McDonald's, or a Burger King, or some other kind of safe, Americanized cuisine. But when you are traveling, experiencing new foods can be a lot of fun, and if you do not want to appear as an outsider, you might have to eat some foods with which you are unfamiliar. Today, we will be trying some different foods from Europe. They might look or smell a little strange, but I assure you, everything here is good."

Not with food in your mouths though, you're not animals.

Kyle piled up a portion of everything on offer and took a seat, digging in straight away. A class on eating food was possibly the best class in existence. Oh yes it was.

"Best class ever, you think?" Ben asked, his plate piled equally high.

Ben ate everything that wasn't moving under its own steam still.

"Has to be. The only way it could get better is if there were fries."

"But there's ice cream," Ben said in tones of deep satisfaction. "So that's good enough for me."

"You sound like a guy who appreciates his ice cream. I'm more of a burger man. Favorite ice cream flavor?"

"I'm in a chocolate chip phase," Ben admitted with a quick laugh. "Chocolate's hard to find back home."

"I haven't tried that one yet. Got any advice for an ice cream rookie?" he asked as he dug into the escargot on his plate.

"Definitely," Ben said, laughing. "Come with me to Chilly Boulder. If you ask my roommate, I practically live there between workouts."

"I can't pass up an opportunity to learn first-hand from an expert," Kyle mused. "When should we go?"

"Friday?" Ben suggested. "I don't have anything to keep me occupied after this class is over."

"Friday's good. I have Laser Tag Adventures tomorrow, but nothing on Friday." Well, nothing as long as Rose didn't kill him after he got back at her for radio. That was still a work in progress. "Meet there at 12?"

"Perfect," Ben declared. "It'll be fun. Come hungry."

"That's never a problem." He poked his haggis. "Maybe after eating this will be the exception." Kyle shrugged and tried to cut it up.

Ben laughed. "Oh, this isn't that bad," he assured Kyle. "You should see what Hutts eat."

"What do Hutts eat?" He wasn't sure what a Hutt was, but if its food choices got that response out of Ben, it had to be interesting.

"Frogs," Ben said. "Live ones. And amphibians called gorgs, which is pretty much as yummy as it sounds."

Kyle took a bite of his haggis and was surprised that it didn't taste as bad as it looked. "Amphibians are not worth the effort. They're hard to catch, don't have much meat on them and you can't eat them raw anyway. Hutts are weird."

"That may be one of the nicest things anyone's said about a Hutt," Ben said with a grin.

"If I ever meet one, I get to say more about them."

"I won't be inviting one here to say hi," Ben said.

Hmmm, food. Even when she didn't need it, Del liked the taste.

George's plate was piled high and he was perfectly happy to be eating everything the teacher had provided. Best. Class. Ever.

Claire decided to be brave and try a little bit of everything.

While some of the options looked entirely unappealing, the whole point of this class was to learn.

Which mean that Rosalind had a little bit of everything and was going to eye her plate dubiously for a bit before eating it.
