Applied Dadaism, Wednesday, Period 2

Students had handwavily gotten notice to meet up in the Preserve behind the school for class today. When they arrived, they'd find Artie balanced seemingly precariously on a trampoline, eyes on his watch, counting down the seconds until class was due to start.

Artie was nothing but punctual when it came to being ridiculous.

When the appointed time arrived, Artie bounced down off the trampoline with a cheerful "Bazoom!" and posed triumphantly in front of the students!

"Welcome, students! I am Artie! The strongest man . . ." He bounced in place for a few moments, as though doing some sort of dance, then struck another heroic pose. ". . . In the world!" He stood up very straight. "And this is Applied Dadaism, the class where each of you will challenge your premisconceptives about proper behavior by challenging the rules of game play and so-called 'polite' society -- and most importantly, you will have fun!"

He looked over the students with a benign and mentorly smirk. "If you're not here for Applied Dadaism, stick around. You may find it to your liking."

He hopped a circle around the students then, looking jovially to the sky. "Here we will play games. We will ask questions. We will make other people ask questions, and perhaps even question why they're asking questions! And at the end of the class, you will each invent a game of your own to play for class."

He stopped in front of the students again, striking yet another pose. "But first! We must get to know each other. Tell us your name -- or nickname, or anything you want us to call you -- and give us an interesting, ridiculous, absurd, and perhaps entirely untrue fact about yourself. For instance! I have a long standing battle for dominance of the summer fields with a swarm of Africanized bees."

Once introductions were dispensed with, Artie stood proud in front of the students, his hands on his hips. "Let's play rock, paper, scissors. But remember, you need not play only rock, paper, or scissors. You can play whatever you think of! What beats what your partner throws? How do you make it with your hands? Have fun!"

Jonas had never seen a teacher quite so excited to be teaching. It was almost infectious and, as the lecture progressed, he found himself smiling and then laughing. This would not be a boring class, Jonas was sure.

Okay, Dandelion was staring at Artie in awe of his total splendor.

He was clearly made of win. However the lecture went totally over her head.

Squall watched the teacher. And started to think that maybe just signing up for whatever without really reading the class descriptions had maybe been a bad idea.

Artie's enthusiasm was perhaps infectious. Or perhaps it was just Robin's natural bounciness that caused him to be so...well, bouncy.

"I'm Jonas," he said, rapidly trying to think of something ridiculous to share, "and I used to be a pirate and wear an eyepatch but I was captured and sent to walk the plank. When I fell in the water, I ended up here and I've changed my ways. I'm still a pirate at heart though. I do miss the sea and my parrot."

Guess what sort of book Jonas had read recently? Guess.

Hayley, being the TA, felt more than happy to introduce herself. "I'm Hayley Fitzpatrick. And I've defeated ogres with a pencil. So there."

"I'm Dandelion Naizen!" she said with a bounce. "And I know the saddest song in the world. Well... most of it. I've forgotten some of the words and the melody here and there. But I totally know it!"

Jonas...hoped that he could pick this game up quickly enough since he'd never played before. It didn't sound that difficult though.
