"Welcome to Romance 101," Drake cheerfully greeted the class. "Let's get down to business. So, what is romance? Originally it came from the world 'romanicus,' which just mean 'of the Roman style.' But that brings to mind orgies and marrying your sister, so we'll just skip over that part. Over the years, it turned into a literary genre full of heroic prose about knights in shining armor and ladies and chivalry and courtly love. Or nowadays, it's a paperback novel with women with a heaving bosoms clinging to men with a bare chests and impossible muscles. Or maybe it's just Lady Gaga singing about her love life. But for the purposes of this class, it's the ideal, deeply passionate love affair. Romance isn't something that can be defined easily -- it can only be experienced, and until you experience it, you will never really understand it. It's affection and attachment so deep that it makes you think you can do anything. It changes your whole outlook on life. It makes your heart race and your spirit soar. It makes you see the beauty in everything.

"We'll keep it simple for today. I want you all to tell me a little about yourself, and tell me why you're taking this class. And then we're going to talk about what romance means to you."

"I'm Cara," she said, tapping one gloved fist against the other. "I think I'm in the wrong class."

Drake peered at Cara. "Awww, how come?" he asked. "No time for love, Dr. Jones?"

"I don't need a class on how to tell people lies to get them to sleep with me." Ladies and gentlemen, the Mord'Sith definition of romance.

"Romance isn't about just sleeping with someone," Drake said. "I think you'll want Dean's class for that. Romance is passion of the spirit, the heart and the mind, not just the body, though that part can be fun, too."

"I don't need any classes on sex, trust me on that." Unless she was going to one to mock the clueless. "Romance is how people who can't get companionship on their own merits convince other people that sharing a bed with them would be a better idea than it is. Nothing to do with passion of any sort."

Really? Full body leather? Griff was going to watch this interaction while he avoided giving his own introduction.

Cara frowned curiously at Griff, she thought he'd been in her other class as well, the one who couldn't hold his drink.

Her frown was rather intimidating, causing Griff to pretend he'd not been looking at all. Pure innocence here. Look, he was a tiny boy, what harm could he be to a chick in full leather?

Considering that Cara herself was shorter than ~~every one else on the bloody show~~ the average D'Haran, she wasn't so sure he was harmless...to other people at least.

She was very good at assessing people if she figured that out with a few glances - to the point where he'd be impressed if he'd any idea. Of course, the boy couldn't quit glancing her way to see if she'd stopped glaring and he could return to staring.

It was Cara's job to be ~~paranoid~~ observant like that. No one else was going to do it.

Which meant Richard had probably nearly gotten himself killed by some sweet old lady who was really a Gar in disguise by now.
