Romance 101, Wednesday, Period 4 -- Class 1

"Welcome to Romance 101," Drake cheerfully greeted the class. "Let's get down to business. So, what is romance? Originally it came from the world 'romanicus,' which just mean 'of the Roman style.' But that brings to mind orgies and marrying your sister, so we'll just skip over that part. Over the years, it turned into a literary genre full of heroic prose about knights in shining armor and ladies and chivalry and courtly love. Or nowadays, it's a paperback novel with women with a heaving bosoms clinging to men with a bare chests and impossible muscles. Or maybe it's just Lady Gaga singing about her love life. But for the purposes of this class, it's the ideal, deeply passionate love affair. Romance isn't something that can be defined easily -- it can only be experienced, and until you experience it, you will never really understand it. It's affection and attachment so deep that it makes you think you can do anything. It changes your whole outlook on life. It makes your heart race and your spirit soar. It makes you see the beauty in everything.

"We'll keep it simple for today. I want you all to tell me a little about yourself, and tell me why you're taking this class. And then we're going to talk about what romance means to you."

Who are you and why are you taking this course?

Kitty had never had to do so many introductions in school before. It had to be a benefit of smaller class sizes.

"Hi, I'm Kitty Pryde, and I'm here because this school is seriously offering a workshop in romance," she said. "I mean, come on."

She had more standardized classes to balance it out, which made it okay in her mind. Yes.

"Somebody's got to show the flip side to the sex ed classes they've got going on right now," Drake beamed. "And welcome to Fandom -- you're one of the new kids, right? Your name came up in the squirrel's notes Saturday night."

"My name is Harper, and I'm here because I've been trying to get into one of your classes all year, Mr. Drake," said Harper, beaming.

Hopefully, by next week she'd remember to turn it down a notch.

"Hey, I'm Lindsay. I'm taking this class because my mom picked it for me," Lindsay said, rolling her eyes.

"I'm Cara," she said, tapping one gloved fist against the other. "I think I'm in the wrong class."

Drake peered at Cara. "Awww, how come?" he asked. "No time for love, Dr. Jones?"

Karla grinned at Drake. "I'm Karla and I'm here because I didn't get all the yelling out of my system in the literature class," she teased.

Drake grinned at Karla. "Good to see you again," he said. "You'll keep me on my toes, but since this class is about romance and not damsels in distress, hopefully you won't have reason to glare."

"Edmund Pevensie," he introduced himself, looking somewhat uncomfortable. "I'm filling in the gaps in my knowledge of this particular area." There, that was a diplomatic answer of sorts.

Momoko stood and grinned. "Momoko Akatsutsumi! I'm 17 and from Tokyo City. I'm taking this class because it sounded totally awesome and I love Romance and Love!"

"Bobby Drake," he introduced himself, complete with goofy little wave. "I'm here because, well. I don't really know that much about romance, and I- kinda should, now. Learn. Stuff." Like how to speak in complete sentences maybe?

"I'm Chloe Saunders and I have enjoyed the other two classes of yours that I took," she said with a smile.

"My name is Christian," Christian began. "I'm in this class because love is the most important thing in the world -- and I have never been in love."

He almost looked sad, there, but cheered up fairly quickly. "The next best thing is to learn about it."

Wha--? She had seen the class name and description on her timetable but in all honesty Rosalind had had more than enough other things to think about in the last few days that this class still came as rather a shock to her.

"Rosalind," she said stiffly, hiding her unease behind formality. "I do believe this was a paperwork error."

She really really wanted to believe that. Rosalind hadn't picked out this class.
