Rookiehood 101, Tuesday, Period 4

Today, the students would find themselves filing into the classroom only to find a note on the board, being stared at thoughtfully by a rather ugly, hairy creature.

Yo class! Meet me Behind the Skool! - Reno

... And if they were so inclined to do so, they'd find another note there, complete with requisite Alot, directing them to head back inside to the Danger Shop. Unfortunately, their teacher wasn't there, either. There was, however, a note! This time, pointing them in the direction of the cabins, to the main campfire, where Reno was waiting. He'd pulled up a place to sit by the the firepit, and was grinning when the students finally made their way there.

In spite of the small herd of Alots that had gathered around him, yes. Reno had the sneaking suspicion that he was going to have to get used to these guys.

"Yo, Rookies!" He shot off a half-assed little salute as he pulled himself to his feet. "I ain't gonna bother gettin' introductions outta you. You'll be sick like hell of 'em by the end of the week, and if I don't know who the hell you are, I'll just call you 'Rookie' anyhow. Deal, yo."

A few more Alots wandered in, to make themselves comfortable by the firepit.

"In case you ain't figured it out yet, today's lesson is on hazing, yo. I figure I'll get the first problem most Rookies'll see outta the way here and now. Think of the screw-around I gave you all from the classroom to here as a rite of passage, yo. Before you can be part of the group, you gotta deal with the shit that it takes to get you in in the first place. It's like a bondin' ritual. Somethin' you do to prove that you got what it takes to make the group run right later on. And I ain't done with you yet, yo." He wrinkled his nose, as if trying to concentrate really hard on what he was about to say, next. "I've gone ahead and set up an obstacle course for you, behind these strange animals."

Speaking with proper grammar was hard, damn it. But at least the Alots were clearing out, and the course in question was now in plain view.

"Lucky you, you'll all get to run the course, yo." Reno bit his tongue as the last of the creatures glanced back, and was silent until it gave a little shrug of its hairy shoulders, and wandered away. "And when you're done, because I ain't a total monster? Cake. On another note, I got one Rookie, Elena over there, playin' TA for me already, but I'm interested in takin' on another if any of you want the added perks of not only bein' my Rookie, but bein' picked on by me a little less than the rest, and helpin' me give your classmates a hard time. Come see me once you run the course if you're interested, yo."

"Ha! I knew it! I am so telling Rikku you made me get syrup in my hair!" She grinned for real, with only a slight bit of evil. He was totally getting a hug before she left to get cleaned up, even if she had to chase him across the island.

"It's fine! Although I ran the batteries down a few weeks ago when I was four. Welcome back! Do I have to call you Professor now? And when did you last eat? Do I need to bring you sandwiches or something?"

"I had breakfast this morning," Reno replied, with a tolerant roll of his eyes. "And if you call me Professor, I'll have to get cranky, yo. Once a Reno, always a Reno. It's law or somethin'."

He probably needed to eat some more, anyhow. He was totally planning on doing penance for all of this food waste by sending a few crates of non-perishables back to Edge, for Reeve to distribute around his old neighborhood.

If Momoko knew, she'd hand deliver it. As it was, she just knew her sort-of big brother seemed thinner than the last time she'd seen him.

"Fine, fine!" She was totally going to hold 'professor' for when he needed poking at. "Are you back for just the summer or for longer?"

"I... got no clue," he admitted, shrugging a little. "I tried askin' permission to come here for a bit, but the boss didn't take it so well. I don't even know if I got a job to go back to, yo."

The Alots were staring. A lot. Still.

"Guess I'm kinda wingin' it right now."

"I don't know what they paid you to do? But you totally still can do it if it's something you like and it's what you need to do. Even if you don't get paid." She folded her ~~wings~~ arms. "I still help people and fight and stuff when I'm here, and it's not my job."

Reno twitched a bit of a smile, at that.

"Yeah. Ain't nothin' stoppin' me from runnin' around Edge and beatin' down monsters on my own time, yo. Shit, they drop gil anyhow. Ain't like I need Tseng's money to get by."

Maybe he wanted Tseng's money, though. So there.

"Maybe sometime this term, I'll get to talkin' about what it means to be proud of what you're doin', yo."

"Oh! Oh!" She ~~flapped~~ waved her ~~wings~~ arms at that. "That reminds me! Zack said, do you know Zack? He said your monsters kill people just because. Is that right?"

Oooh yeah, Reno knew Zack. And he managed to keep a grimace from his face at the mention of the name.

"I met him once or twice," he replied, vaguely. "And he's right, yo. Monsters back on Gaia don't care who you are. If you're breathin', you're fair game."

Momoko nodded. "Good! I mean, not good, but that means they're different and I didn't know that, so I wanted to apologize for what I said that one time!"

She gave a slight bow. "In my world, monsters can sometimes be changed back into whatever they used to be, and I didn't know about yours; I've wanted to tell you that ever since Zack told me."

Reno had to gnaw on the inside of his cheek a bit to keep from laughing aloud at the bow. It wasn't every day that you were bowed at by a girl coated in yellow feathers, after all.

"Well, I appreciate it, then. If you got the option of reforming them, then by all means, take it, right? Guess it's a matter of different worlds all over again, yoto."

"Right!" She felt sooo much better, finally telling him. "It really is great to have you home! Welcome back!" She meant what she said, of course, but the evil urge was now completely overwhelming and she bounced forward to hug him.

The glint in her eye, may have given away her intention.

Oooooh, no. There was no way that Reno was going to get himself smeared with syrup from two rookies, today. And so it was with a grin and a laugh that he bounced sideways and back, shaking his head as he went.

"Shit, you kids must really like me, yo. You go an' get yourself cleaned up, and we'll negotiate all this huggin' junk when you're done, Rookie."

Yeah. Rookie. There was now a small collection of them, apparently.

Eeek! He called her rookie?! She did a little dance inside and her face broke into a full smile as she followed him. "Aww! But I'm almost sort-of like your little sister! Can't I have just one hug?"

A goopy clump of hair hit her face as she moved.

Reno considered this request very, very carefully for all of... Half a second.

"You can have a handshake," Reno decided, rolling his eyes and smirking. "But it's unprofessional or some junk to get into the habit of huggin' the students, yo. Ask anyone."

Yeah. That was going to be his excuse from here on in. Because Reno was so worried about looking professional.

"Eh? But it's professional to call you by your first name?" She smirked back at him.

"First name nothin'," Reno replied, with a grin and an eyeroll to counter that smirk. "It's my only name, yo. And 'Professor' makes it sound like I went to school for ten years to teach this crap, so that don't fit. I ain't got no degree in this sorta thing. It's just been my life for ages now, is all."

She was totally going to be failed for this one, right?

"You've been a rookie for that long?!"

"Fuuuuunny," Reno snorted, and that came with another eyeroll. "I mean, I been trainin' up Rookies, yo. My rookie days are long, long behind me."

Well, so far as being a Turk went. He was still pretty much a rookie so far as this 'being a teacher' thing went.

"Because you're that old!" She tried to nod solemnly, but couldn't hold back a laugh. "Sorry! Sorry! I couldn't resist! I really am happy to see you again and be in your class and I won't hug you or shake your hand even though I have a wonderful huge blob of syrup collected in my palm."

But oh, was it tempting!

Reno was now eyeing her very, very warily, even if that air of amusement that was about him wasn't going anywhere.

"You ain't gonna throw that at me, either, yo."

Just letting her know!

"Of course not! You're a teacher! I totally have respect for your authority!" She reached out to pat his shoulder. With the goopy hand, of course.

At this point, Reno was going to just wrinkle his nose and let her at it. Sticky glob of syrup and all.

It was going to happen one way or another, wasn't it?

"Oy, Rookie."

He let her wreck his suit because he cared. Anyhow, he had great faith in mechanical washer and dryer systems.

Momoko stopped just short of actually depositing the goo on his jacket. He'd called her 'Rookie' again!! Eeek!

She flashed a real smile at him and closed her palm, so that just a single sticky finger poked him instead of a whole goopy hand ruining his jacket. "I know you're only calling me that because of the class, but I am totally going to earn that nickname." She turned to walk away but turned back after a few steps to add, "and you are totally getting a non-feathery hug if I see you in town, because some teacher rules just don't count for Renos!"

Reno just laughed and gave his head a shake.

"You gotta catch me first, yo." He probably wouldn't put too much effort into running away. "See you next week, kiddo."
