Rookiehood 101, Tuesday, Period 4

Today, the students would find themselves filing into the classroom only to find a note on the board, being stared at thoughtfully by a rather ugly, hairy creature.

Yo class! Meet me Behind the Skool! - Reno

... And if they were so inclined to do so, they'd find another note there, complete with requisite Alot, directing them to head back inside to the Danger Shop. Unfortunately, their teacher wasn't there, either. There was, however, a note! This time, pointing them in the direction of the cabins, to the main campfire, where Reno was waiting. He'd pulled up a place to sit by the the firepit, and was grinning when the students finally made their way there.

In spite of the small herd of Alots that had gathered around him, yes. Reno had the sneaking suspicion that he was going to have to get used to these guys.

"Yo, Rookies!" He shot off a half-assed little salute as he pulled himself to his feet. "I ain't gonna bother gettin' introductions outta you. You'll be sick like hell of 'em by the end of the week, and if I don't know who the hell you are, I'll just call you 'Rookie' anyhow. Deal, yo."

A few more Alots wandered in, to make themselves comfortable by the firepit.

"In case you ain't figured it out yet, today's lesson is on hazing, yo. I figure I'll get the first problem most Rookies'll see outta the way here and now. Think of the screw-around I gave you all from the classroom to here as a rite of passage, yo. Before you can be part of the group, you gotta deal with the shit that it takes to get you in in the first place. It's like a bondin' ritual. Somethin' you do to prove that you got what it takes to make the group run right later on. And I ain't done with you yet, yo." He wrinkled his nose, as if trying to concentrate really hard on what he was about to say, next. "I've gone ahead and set up an obstacle course for you, behind these strange animals."

Speaking with proper grammar was hard, damn it. But at least the Alots were clearing out, and the course in question was now in plain view.

"Lucky you, you'll all get to run the course, yo." Reno bit his tongue as the last of the creatures glanced back, and was silent until it gave a little shrug of its hairy shoulders, and wandered away. "And when you're done, because I ain't a total monster? Cake. On another note, I got one Rookie, Elena over there, playin' TA for me already, but I'm interested in takin' on another if any of you want the added perks of not only bein' my Rookie, but bein' picked on by me a little less than the rest, and helpin' me give your classmates a hard time. Come see me once you run the course if you're interested, yo."

[OCD on the way up! Welcome to Rookiehood 101!]

Chloe was beginning to wonder if Reno was insane as she looked around at everything.

Ino? Was mostly amused.

What? She knew Reno. She'd been half expecting something like this.

"At least," Ino observed as she wandered over to her Rookie, "he's gone for mostly ridiculous. Probably 'cause he don't want any issues on the island."

Ino was ignoring any Alots that showed up around her yes. She was going to speak the way she did. Hmph.

Chloe smiled at her. "I take it that you know our teacher, then?"

Chloe wasn't sure what the hell the Alots were, but she was trying to ignore them, too.

Ino grinned at her. "He kinda did for me what I'm doin' for you, yeah?"

That was totally an explanation.

"He's a dumbass," Ino stop saying that where Reno could hear you, "but he's a good guy."

It was an explanation as far as Chloe was concerned.

If Ino was calling the teacher names, then it was a good sign they were on good terms.

"That's good to know." She looked at the obstacle course again. "Of course if I never get that junk out of my hair after this, I may have a different opinion of him." Yes, Chloe was grinning as she said that.

Chloe wasn't one of those people that were afraid of getting their hands dirty, but she thought this was a little excessive.

However, she went through the course, only cursing sometimes. The syrup and the feathers were what caused the loudest curses from her. That was saying a lot.

When she managed to retrieve a plate, she held onto it tightly.

It wasn't that she was all that caring about getting cake, you see. It was the principle of the thing.

Out of both a sense of humor and a certain appreciation for deviousness, Tahiri mostly looked amused at the machinations it'd taken them to get there; she was more interested in the Alots than giving him some kind of look of doom.

Although the obstacle course . . . was kind of special. Wow.

Ino laughed.

"He'll be a dead man walkin' if he's made it so it doesn't wash out." She would see to that. Seriously. Ino was fond of her hair. "You know the worst part of this? I've got another class right after."

And wouldn't that be fun?
intraspective: (huh?)

Ino was well aware that showing distaste and being a baby about the course would only net her more mocking from him. (She had so much faith in him, you see.)

Which would be why she was taking the course with every inch of dignity she could. The Jell-o wasn't so bad, exactly, and she claimed her hula hoop with little difficulty. The sawdust was, ew. Her footing was fine (because Ino was a ninja, come on) but ewwww sawdust and Jell-o and sandals were not the best of mixes.

A toss of the hula hoop, thrown only a little harder than she might've (it was a way of getting her 'ewwww gross' reaction out), right over that barrel. And... then a pointy stick.

Ino eyed the balloons for a long long moment before sighing and accepting the corn syrup shower that came with breaking the balloons. Maybe she'd kill him anyway. Ewwwww.

And... feathers. Great. Joyous.

On the good end of things? She had her plate.

Ino had chocolate cake!

Ino was also covered in a sticky mess of gunk and torn between being grumpy and snickering.

When a feather tried to stick to her cake, snickering won over.

"You spelt school wrong in your first note," Ino informed him, while pretending she wasn't covered in gunk.

No need to recap some of the utterly disgusting (and frequently biologically secreted) things Tahiri had been drenched in before. Jell-o was at least edible (not that she was actively eating it after other people's feet had been in it, she knew how gross those could get, thanks) and didn't try to eat your skin off slowly or anything like that.

The same went for the corn syrup once she got to that point, closing her eyes and grimacing with tolerant amusement when the stuff ran down the back of her jumpsuit collar and into her ears and . . .

. . . and then there were feathers. But there was a plate, too.

Tahiri felt a little bit stupid (it was mostly the feathers) by the time she was done, but she chose to look at the whole thing in the guise of 'well, all my extremities are intact and none of these substances are trying to dissolve my clothes or equipment.'

Mostly.

Because -- feathers . . . ?

This was not exactly a triumph, and Tahiri was not making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS, and after ten minutes of being covered with sawdust and syrup and feathers it wasn't all that hard for her to overstate her satisfaction.

Anyway, this cake was great.
