Rookiehood 101, Tuesday, Period 4

Today, the students would find themselves filing into the classroom only to find a note on the board, being stared at thoughtfully by a rather ugly, hairy creature.

Yo class! Meet me Behind the Skool! - Reno

... And if they were so inclined to do so, they'd find another note there, complete with requisite Alot, directing them to head back inside to the Danger Shop. Unfortunately, their teacher wasn't there, either. There was, however, a note! This time, pointing them in the direction of the cabins, to the main campfire, where Reno was waiting. He'd pulled up a place to sit by the the firepit, and was grinning when the students finally made their way there.

In spite of the small herd of Alots that had gathered around him, yes. Reno had the sneaking suspicion that he was going to have to get used to these guys.

"Yo, Rookies!" He shot off a half-assed little salute as he pulled himself to his feet. "I ain't gonna bother gettin' introductions outta you. You'll be sick like hell of 'em by the end of the week, and if I don't know who the hell you are, I'll just call you 'Rookie' anyhow. Deal, yo."

A few more Alots wandered in, to make themselves comfortable by the firepit.

"In case you ain't figured it out yet, today's lesson is on hazing, yo. I figure I'll get the first problem most Rookies'll see outta the way here and now. Think of the screw-around I gave you all from the classroom to here as a rite of passage, yo. Before you can be part of the group, you gotta deal with the shit that it takes to get you in in the first place. It's like a bondin' ritual. Somethin' you do to prove that you got what it takes to make the group run right later on. And I ain't done with you yet, yo." He wrinkled his nose, as if trying to concentrate really hard on what he was about to say, next. "I've gone ahead and set up an obstacle course for you, behind these strange animals."

Speaking with proper grammar was hard, damn it. But at least the Alots were clearing out, and the course in question was now in plain view.

"Lucky you, you'll all get to run the course, yo." Reno bit his tongue as the last of the creatures glanced back, and was silent until it gave a little shrug of its hairy shoulders, and wandered away. "And when you're done, because I ain't a total monster? Cake. On another note, I got one Rookie, Elena over there, playin' TA for me already, but I'm interested in takin' on another if any of you want the added perks of not only bein' my Rookie, but bein' picked on by me a little less than the rest, and helpin' me give your classmates a hard time. Come see me once you run the course if you're interested, yo."

Reno just grinned pleasantly back at Ino, pleased that he'd managed to effectively turn most of his students into chocobos.

He also hoped that Elena was catching all of this on film, damn it.

"I know," he replied, merrily. "Kept at least one of them critters occupied for a while, though, didn't it?"

"I somehow doubt that was your purpose for leaving note like that," she sniffed.

"What, you think I don't know how to spell?" Reno placed a hand over his chest. "Rookie, I'm hurt. Everyone knows there ain't no K in 'school,' yo."

"I've seen your texts," she pointed out, "I know you take whatever shortcut you can when it comes to the fine art of spelling. Ain't got much of nothing to do with what you actually know."

"So," Reno said, taking a moment to stick his tongue out at her, "maybe I do it on purpose, yoto."

Ino laughed and crossed her arms. Yes, over her clothing. Look, it was pretty much a write off anyway, she was allowed to mess it up further. "I'd say 'who wants to look dumb on purpose' but then I'd be being hypocritical."

Just a bit, yes, Ino.

Snort.

"Just a bit, yo," Reno replied, grinning lopsidedly. "Anyhow, it ain't like people couldn't figure out what I was sayin', there. I mean, looks like I got a whole flock of chocobo runnin' about today."

He sounded entirely too proud of that fact, yes.

"And you're the mama chocobo," she retorted. "Which, really, means I ought to give you a hug!"

See Ino. See Ino attempt exactly that.

And see Reno laugh and skip backward, blowing another raspberry Ino's way.

"Gotta catch me first, Rookie!"

He really ought to watch his mouth. One of these days, they were going to listen, and try to gang up on him or something.

Ino was a Rookie. And Ino was a ninja.

Ino was going to cheat like hell by flying her hands through a set of seals. Then, oh look, there was a log where she was.

And a Rookie behind him.

"Aw, fu--"

That was totally Reno, tripping backwards into her, wasn't it?

"I... totally had that comin' to me, yo."

She clung like a clinging thing, laughing into his back.

"You really did! And I gave you exactly what you deserved!"

"I'm gonna stand by that this activity was totally in your best interests," Reno laughed, shaking his head and trying to squirm free. "Now leggo, before you get that shit in my ponytail, yo."

There wasn't much hope for that, was there?

Er.

"I think that might be a bit of a lost cause already," she said, a bit dubiously, oh so slowly letting go.

Because, really, her hair was filthy and she'd been clinging to him and, well...

Oh, gods, there was a squelching sound as he stepped forward and tried to peel himself free. That was never a good sign.

"... Kickass."

And now he had to ask himself the all-important question. How badly did he want that towel that he'd handed over to Elena before class?

Not that badly.

"Well, it's good to be loved, I guess."

"Did you doubt that?" she asked with wide, innocent eyes. "And you do realize there's very few ways of making me not find some way of getting back at you for every single class like this, right?"

There was one, exactly. And Ino was just going to look incredibly ridiculously innocent at him. ... Maybe puppy eyes.

... Damn those puppy eyes all to hell. Damn them, so.

"Most classes ain't gonna be like this one," he replied, rolling his eyes skyward and working up a decent smirk all over again while ignoring the fact that his hair was currently pasted to the back of his jacket. "But you gotta admit, it was a kickass way to start a workshop, yo."

If it wasn't for the feathers at the end, Reno might even have chosen to do the run, too.

"I ain't going to bolster your ego much," she warned him. "I'm the wrong sort of Rookie for that. But it was alright."

A dirty look kinda ruined the puppy eyes temporarily.

"Even if it does mean I've got to go to my next class like this." Damn him.

Reno's smile could have illuminated a darkened room, it was so bright.

"Don't tell me you didn't expect me to pull somethin' like this? Really? After all we been through together, Ino. After Smoochy. You'd think you'd know to pack a change of clothes, yo."

And now he was just being a shithead.

Ino fleetingly wondered if Elena would help her burgle Reno's place (he had to have one, surely she could find it with a little work) and steal all of his clothing.

It would serve him right.

"A good ninja travels light," she said loftily. "I will hug you again if you keep that up."

It would serve him right!

And it would give him an excuse to go streaking. While laughing like a complete loon. Because why the hell not?

"Fine, fine, I'll behave," he chuckled, shaking his head. "I'll try to keep the rest of the lessons cleaner, yo. Cross my grubby little heart."

No, no see, Ino would be all for doing it so he had nothing to wear to class. Couldn't have a teacher be naked, you know.

"Your grubby little heart needs watchin'," she said dryly. "You still lookin' for another TA?"

"Hey, ain't nobody else offered," Reno laughed, crossing his arms over his chest. "You lookin' to be the other Rookie standin' on the sidelines, takin' bribes for towels?"

"That an' watchin' out for my Rookie," Ino tilted her head over at Chloe. "Been teachin' her some things; she's shy."

Which, yes, meant Ino would be more easily bribed by Chloe than, like, anyone else. Shush.

"How 'bout it? Think you can put up with me?"

Reno glanced Chloe's way, made a mental note to stick his neck out for the quiet kid whenever he could, and then gave his shoulders a halfhearted shrug.

"Tell you what, Rookie. Gimmie a week to think on it, yo. I know I can trust you to do the job, which is a point in your favor, anyhow."

And maybe he just liked making his rookies squirm in anticipation. You could never tell, with Reno.
