Home Ec is Outrageous!; Monday, Period Five [ 05/10 ].

This was it! The very first day of his new class, the very first chapter in the book entitled Aquaman's Adventures in High School Education! And he was prepared! As the students came into the home ec classroom, they would find on their tables a box of various supplies, some crayons and markers and paints, scissors and hot glue guns. And glitter, of course! One didn't have to be a long-standing resident of the island to know that glitter could be a crucial element in a project such as todays! And preparation was at least fifty five percent of victory, if not sixty.

The large man in the tight superhero outfit positively beamed from the head of the classroom as the students got settled, waiting for the precise minute for class to begin. Once it came, he started, bursting with professorial pride. "Hello, intrepid young knowledge seekers! I trust your first day of world-expanding workshops have been going swimmingly, and allow me to welcome you to the home ec classroom. Here, we will join forces together to explore the outrageous wonders of the home economics world! My name is Aquaman, and you may be wondering what a well-known superhero and king of the undersea realm might be doing here teaching home economics in a summer workshop! Well, let me tell you!"

He took a moment to turn around, picking up a marker for the dry erase board, and he wrote out across it a phrase. The marker squeaked, quite a lot, with each careful stroke. Aquaman, however, didn't seem to notice. He finished with a very deliberate and dramatic dot on the bottom of his exclamation point and backed away.

"A man (or woman)'s home is his castle, and if he (or she) cannot maintain his (or her) own castle, how can he (or she) be expected to maintain his kingdom?" he read off importantly.

He stood there admiring it for a moment before turning back around to the class. "See, just like crime fighting, I believe that maintaing home and hearth to be a hands-on job! It builds character! If that means I'm to mend my own socks, well, then, mend them I shall!"

Like Mera would ever mend them for him. And, besides, Aquaman didn't really ever wear socks, anyway.

"So, my intrepid individuals, these next few weeks, we shall embark on the great journey of learning how to better take care of the ecomonics of home! Because home is where the heart is! On your desks, you will find a syllabus, so you know precisely what to look forward to, and please let me know if you have any questions at all. Today's adventure?"

Again, he turned to the board. Again, the marker squeaked with every careful move.

"Introductions & Color Scheme!"

"Introductions!" he said. "And color scheme! It is important for superheroes and homes alike to have a certain color scheme to ground them and make them noteable! As you can see, I am quite fond of orange and green, myself. They are bold and outrageous, just like me! Green is also the color of life and vitality, and of nature, which gives us life...and vitality. And orange, well, orange is for vitality, too, and it helps inspire creativity and it's really, really noticeable. Plus? I like them a lot!"

"So I'd like you all to take a few minutes and think about what colors you would like to choose to represent you! Think well, but think quick! Then, we will take turns going around the room; introduce yourself, telling us who you are, a little about where you are from, why you've decided to take Home Ec, and then tell us what your colors are and why! Then, we will spend the rest of the class using those colors to design a room! It can be any kind of room! Bedroom, living room, bath room...it doesn't matter, as long as you use your colors as the central theme for them. You can use whatever you like to design them; everything you need should be there at your desks. If you're feeling particularly bold and brave, there are shoeboxes provided so you can put your design into a really cool diorama!"

"So, if there aren't any questions, five minutes! And then we'll talk color!"

[[ please wait for the slowly approaching OCD has arrived! ]]

And Sara was unlikely to find a thing wrong with that. Silly LMM characters.

"They seem friendly, though."

"They do," Rilla agreed. "Do you suppose they have names?"

Either the deer or the trees, really.

"Oh, I'm sure they do. It's just a matter of whether or not they want us to know what they are," Sara decided. "There's an old, old story about the Battle of the Trees, where all the trees' names are important, only I've never quite been able to figure out how to pronounce them all. I wonder if the trees, or the animals for that matter, would be happy with the names we tried to give them, not knowing what they call themselves?"

"I think they might appreciate our attempt to know them," Rilla mused, "even if our pronunciation is horrible. Well, the aspens might be upset. They seem the type to hold grudges."

"And you never know about the yews," Sara added. "They can be temperamental. But think of all the things they've seen in their long, long lives. Do you suppose some of the trees here might be able to catch us up on all the things we've missed in the past century?"

"That would be convenient," Rilla said, "but I'm not certain that what passes for news among humans would mean all that much to a tree."

"That's true." Sara inclined her head in acknowledgment. "But just think of the stories they could tell. I'm sure I could talk it out of them somehow, if I could speak their language."

"I'm certain you could," Rilla replied, nodding her head. "You seem like a very determined young lady."

"And you seem like a very imaginative one," Sara replied gracefully. She sounded as though she approved. "Did you say your last name was Blythe?"

It was a small island; word got around.

Oh, thank goodness. Someone who understood How Things Worked. "It is," Rilla said, nodding. "Father grew up in Avonlea."

"And your mother is something of a writer, isn't she?" Sara went on, looking just as relieved to find someone else who also knew How Things Worked. "Well, that explains that, only I guess you've a couple more years behind you than anything we'd have heard in Carlisle last. Oh, it is so good to know someone else from the Island here," she concluded, clapping her hands joyfully.

"It is," Rilla squealed joyfully. "Oh, I have been so horribly homesick."

"Well, we can help each other not be homesick not dirty oh my god not dirty," Sara declared with all the finality of a royal decree. "Do you know, just last night I was out walking on the grounds, imagining they were the orchards back on Uncle Alec's farm, and it just isn't the same. But I think I feel much better about all this now."

"Me too," Rilla agreed, smiling.
