Home Ec is Outrageous!; Monday, Period Five [ 05/10 ].

This was it! The very first day of his new class, the very first chapter in the book entitled Aquaman's Adventures in High School Education! And he was prepared! As the students came into the home ec classroom, they would find on their tables a box of various supplies, some crayons and markers and paints, scissors and hot glue guns. And glitter, of course! One didn't have to be a long-standing resident of the island to know that glitter could be a crucial element in a project such as todays! And preparation was at least fifty five percent of victory, if not sixty.

The large man in the tight superhero outfit positively beamed from the head of the classroom as the students got settled, waiting for the precise minute for class to begin. Once it came, he started, bursting with professorial pride. "Hello, intrepid young knowledge seekers! I trust your first day of world-expanding workshops have been going swimmingly, and allow me to welcome you to the home ec classroom. Here, we will join forces together to explore the outrageous wonders of the home economics world! My name is Aquaman, and you may be wondering what a well-known superhero and king of the undersea realm might be doing here teaching home economics in a summer workshop! Well, let me tell you!"

He took a moment to turn around, picking up a marker for the dry erase board, and he wrote out across it a phrase. The marker squeaked, quite a lot, with each careful stroke. Aquaman, however, didn't seem to notice. He finished with a very deliberate and dramatic dot on the bottom of his exclamation point and backed away.

"A man (or woman)'s home is his castle, and if he (or she) cannot maintain his (or her) own castle, how can he (or she) be expected to maintain his kingdom?" he read off importantly.

He stood there admiring it for a moment before turning back around to the class. "See, just like crime fighting, I believe that maintaing home and hearth to be a hands-on job! It builds character! If that means I'm to mend my own socks, well, then, mend them I shall!"

Like Mera would ever mend them for him. And, besides, Aquaman didn't really ever wear socks, anyway.

"So, my intrepid individuals, these next few weeks, we shall embark on the great journey of learning how to better take care of the ecomonics of home! Because home is where the heart is! On your desks, you will find a syllabus, so you know precisely what to look forward to, and please let me know if you have any questions at all. Today's adventure?"

Again, he turned to the board. Again, the marker squeaked with every careful move.

"Introductions & Color Scheme!"

"Introductions!" he said. "And color scheme! It is important for superheroes and homes alike to have a certain color scheme to ground them and make them noteable! As you can see, I am quite fond of orange and green, myself. They are bold and outrageous, just like me! Green is also the color of life and vitality, and of nature, which gives us life...and vitality. And orange, well, orange is for vitality, too, and it helps inspire creativity and it's really, really noticeable. Plus? I like them a lot!"

"So I'd like you all to take a few minutes and think about what colors you would like to choose to represent you! Think well, but think quick! Then, we will take turns going around the room; introduce yourself, telling us who you are, a little about where you are from, why you've decided to take Home Ec, and then tell us what your colors are and why! Then, we will spend the rest of the class using those colors to design a room! It can be any kind of room! Bedroom, living room, bath room...it doesn't matter, as long as you use your colors as the central theme for them. You can use whatever you like to design them; everything you need should be there at your desks. If you're feeling particularly bold and brave, there are shoeboxes provided so you can put your design into a really cool diorama!"

"So, if there aren't any questions, five minutes! And then we'll talk color!"

[[ please wait for the slowly approaching OCD has arrived! ]]

The fact he was wearing the same kind of spandex get-up as Deadpool had Tara apprehensive as Aquaman started to talk, but she relaxed as he kept going. It seemed like he could be goofy, but she appreciated his enthusiasm -- and besides, she liked the idea of her room as being her own little queendom.

She jotted down a couple notes as she contemplated what colors she'd pick.

Calvin grinned as he listened to the lecture. This class was awesome.

"I'm T-Tara Maclay," Tara informed her shoes, then managed to take the vast and frightening step of looking at the rest of the class for most of her introduction.

She was never going to like public speaking. But knowing she was going to have to do this three times a semester made it ever so slightly easier.

"Um ... I'm 16. A j-junior now. From, um ... this really tiny town in California. I'm in this class because ... I like cooking and stuff to make people happy? And I figure I'll have a house someday. So this seemed practical. My colors are purple and blue."

Tara lined her shoebox in purple crepe paper for wallpaper, glued down construction paper to represent a hardwood floor, and then frowned at the scraps of fabric. She was trying to figure out how to make a big, luxurious bed out of them.

"Calvin, I'm from the mid-west, I'm in this class because my friend Hobbes thought it's be fun," Calvin said. "My colours are red and orange, and black but that's technically a tone. I picked them because they're bright and they remind me of Hobbes."

Bod hadn't known what to expect when he'd taken this class and now, even with the persistent squeaking of the marker, he couldn't help but smile. The teacher was strange and that made him feel oddly at ease. It made learning things a little less stressful.

"I'm Nobody Owens but I go by Bod," he said, well used to introductions on the first day of classes by now. "It is my real name and my parents didn't hate me when they gave it to me. I decided to take this class because I've just recently left home so I figured that learning how to live would be beneficial."

It wasn't like living in a graveyard with a group of ghosts had prepared him for this sort of thing. There wasn't much need for colour schemes.

"I believe my colour scheme would be black and dark blue," he said, looking down at his clothes of the same color. "Perhaps some dark green. I tend to like darker colors."

Bod wasn't a crafty person. It wasn't because he was bad at it, he'd just never had to do anything like this. That wasn't going to stop him from trying.

The shoebox in front of him got lined with dark blue construction paper and the floor was covered with the same color since Bod liked everything to be fairly consistent.

Bod molded some pipe cleaners into a desk and chair foundation, covered them with black paper and stuck them in a corner before doing the same for a rather large bookcase. Now, he didn't know what type of room this was but he found he liked it. He just needed to add more things.

Rilla's hazel eyes had gone very, very wide as she tried to decide if an outfit that...clingy...was more or less scandalous than seeing people's knees.

"I'm Rilla Blythe," she began carefully, trying not to lisp as she had in her previous class. "I will be 14 in July," which sounded so much older than saying she was 13 now, "and I'm from Prince Edward Island, in Canada. In 1913." That seemed to be important to note here. "And I like green as well?"

Because it set off her coloring nicely. Rilla was an occasionally vain girl.

Rilla could knit, but designing a room was rather beyond her. She found herself trying to recreate the sitting room in Ingleside and began to become horribly homesick.

"Hi!" Dandelion said as she shot out of her seat to wave at everyone in the classroom "I'm Dandelion! I'm in a band and sing and shit. And I love chartreuse and Marigold! No! I mean magenta and metallic root beer! Wait... Anti-establishment mint green and burnt orange! No! Wait a second..."

She paused for a moment trying to clear her head.

"What was the question?"

The look Sara gave the teacher was nothing short of openly dubious; she had hardly been known as the most modest and retiring of girls when it came to wardrobe among the Carlisle set, but the differences between scarlet dresses trimmed with lace and outfits like . . . well, like that were vast indeed.

She couldn't, though, help but be somewhat charmed by his enthusiasm, even as she quailed a little inside at the thought of spending seven weeks learning tasks that had always met with disaster for her. Although, she supposed, it was somewhat comforting to know that there were others her age who might be just as hopeless, otherwise why would a class like this even need to exist?

Then, too, Felicity wasn't here to scorn her less than satisfactory efforts. Sara missed her cousin, but this would be somewhat easier away from that youthful queen of domesticity's critical gaze.
