Maritime Safety, [Monday, Period Three]

Bond had *handwavily* informed his class to meet him at the docks, where he waited for them to arrive by a motorboat.

"Good morning," he greeted when they'd all arrived. "This is Maritime Safety, so if that's not the class you signed up for, you're in the wrong place. For those of you who haven't taken one of my classes before, I'm Professor Bond, and your TAs for this class are Kyle and Rose, I trust them implicitly and so should you." High praise that.

"The purpose of this class to teach you all something about how to handle yourself out on the open water," Bond explained. "But today we'll just be starting off with introductions and some basics of safety and boat handling. I want each of you to tell me and the rest of the class your names, if you can swim, what you already know about open water sailing, and something interesting about yourself. You start."

After the class had finished, he picked up a bright yellow and red vest, and continued. "Two things you should know. One, this is a personal floatation device, also known as a life jacket," he said, demonstrating the proper technique for donning one. "If you fall into the water, it will keep you afloat long enough for us to fish you out. We won't necessarily be using them every class, but we will today. Please put them on before we get in the boat."

He kept talking as they dressed in the vests. "Two, since you'll all actually get a chance to pilot the boat today, left is port, right is starboard." He held up the relevant hand for each. "The front or fore of a ship is the bow, and the rear or aft of one is the stern.Remember that, as I will be using that terminology. Now if you're all in your vests, into the boat."

[ooc: wait for ocd up!]

Hiccup ...and Toothless.

Hiccup listened carefully, standing at the back of the other students, Toothless leaning over his shoulder watchfully. This wasn't quite what he'd expected. Boats were big! And wood! And had carved dragon heads and sails and shields arrayed down the side! Well, at least the boats he was used to did. This boat was pretty small. "Well, at least it's colourful."

...and he had tried to leave the dragon behind, but a dragon pretty much goes anywhere he wants, and in this case, he'd wanted to go with Hiccup. Hiccup's plan of looking innocent and hoping no one would notice was pretty much doomed to failure.

Robin was looking forward to this class. He loved the water! Naturally. And he was gonna get to drive the boat? Awesome!

Finding out that there were classes here and she could actually take them had been a thrill at first; although she constantly skipped out of classes back home, these were different! There were human lessons! Ariel couldn't see how they could possibly be as dull as her singing rehearsals with Sebastian.

And even though today's lesson was taking place by the water (she kept nervously looking over her shoulder, as if half expecting her father to suddenly slow up, triton blazing, and destroy them all), it was also going to be taking place on a boat. She couldn't help staring, wide-eyed, at that ultimate vessel of human interaction with the sea. Somehow, it felt truly symbolic of her rebellion.

If her father did show up, boy, did Ariel ever wish that he did so when she was behind the wheel!

"I'm Kyle. I learned to swim in your class last semester," he said to Bond, "I don't know anything about boats except that they float and..." Kyle faltered. "I can't think of anything interesting."

"I'm Hiccup, and yeah, great name, I know. What can I say, it's a Viking tradition. This is Toothless, and he kind of brought himself." Hiccup scratched the side of his head, looking down at his false leg. "I used to swim, now I just kind of go around in circles," he said with a small grin. "But I'm good with boats. Lots of experience with boats. I only ran Dad's into the cliff that one time and it was completely fine."

He paused. "Well, mostly fine. And hey, that mast was pretty old anyway." Another pause. "Something interesting, something interesting..." He looked around, obviously searching, and went with, "I may be redecorating the cafeteria completely in Viking at some point?"

"I don't know if I'm supposed to introduce myself too, but hey, I'm Rose, I can swim really well but never been on a boat," she said, wrinkling her nose a little. "What can I say? I'm from Montana. Which isn't the interesting bit. The interesting bit is that I just graduated."

Which wasn't really interesting either.

"Hi! I'm Robin, and I can swim." He'd been swimming, literally since he was born. And he could breathe underwater besides. "I've been on pontoon boats in the ever glades so I know a bit about motor boats. And yes, I am a talking frog."

Uh-oh. Here was a problem that Ariel, foolishly, hadn't seen coming. Ariel didn't much consider the questions because she, biting her lip nervously, was too busy considering a solution to the issue of how she couldn't very easily introduce herself.

She did still have her nametag, though, so, when it got to her turn, she pointed to that, first and foremost, and then patted her throat a few times. She followed that up with a helpless sort of shrug. No talking. So sorry. What can you do?

Re: Vest Up! - MS [01]

[identity profile] weetinyreese.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 11:05 am (UTC)(link)
Kyle wasn't so sure about the vests. He didn't like the high visibility or the way it made his arms stick out. But he didn't like drowning even more, so he figured out how to put it on and then figured out how to take it off easily before putting it back on.

He then looked around to see if anyone needed help with their vests.

Hiccup struggled into his vest. This was weird. And strangely puffy. Not to mention the colour. "Okay, I guess no one's going to miss me in this. The trails of dead fish should make me easy to find."

Eyes squeezed shut to a squint, Toothless backed up, way out of the way of the other students. "Oh yes, you're just hilarious," Hiccup called after him, shaking his head as the dragon curled up and put his wing over his head.

There was a vest the right size for Robin. Fandom (or Bond) thought of everything!

It was highly unlikely that anyone could have been as excited about putting on a safety vest as Ariel was. No, she didn't completely understand what they were for, nor could she have ever imagined how incredibly dorky they were. You didn't see a lot of life jackets in shipwrecks (never any good ones, anyway), so they were completely new and completely human, and so they must be cool, right?

Ariel was stoked. Even if she did need a second to really understand how to put hers on.

Re: Pilot the Boat! - MS [01]

[identity profile] abitlegless.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 11:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Well," Hiccup said as he eyed the very unfamilar controls. "At least it doesn't have a mast."

But it did have the thing at the back making the boat go, which was fascinating, and he craned his head around to stare at it, trying to work out what it was, how it worked, and if he could take it apart.

Which, what with the not looking where he was going and the leaning, wasn't doing much for his ability to actually steer the boat.

"Left goes left, right goes right?" Kyle asked, feeling uncomfortable being so out in the open.

This was the hard part, as Robin needed to stand on something in order to not have to reach over his head. As it was he wrapped both tiny arms around the tiller to move it.

[identity profile] shes-got-legs.livejournal.com 2010-05-10 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, sure. Hand the overexcited, hapless teenager the reins. Tiller. Whatever.

Ariel got a grin on her face that might have been accompanied with a manacle chuckle, and she got ready to really explore how this baby could move. Port! Then starboard! Port again! Starboard!

She was on a boat!

....a motorboat. With not exactly the smoothest, quickly handling features. But for Ariel? It was insane and she thought she was doing quite well, all things considered.

This was a much smaller class than Kyle was used to keeping an eye out for. The dragon made up for the size with its own size.
