Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part III

Hopefully things weren't so awkward before. Maybe things ended up well. Maybe, just maybe, you ended up meeting someone special.

Or you took your shirt off because Layla Miller convinced you it was destiny. But she's a damn dirty liar and well know it.

[Please wait for OCD is up! This is the SECOND post for general mingling. Use this post if your browser can't handle the comment load of the first mingling post. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are here.]

Didi took her own seat in the shade. After a few moments, she leaned toward Rosalind, offering a plate of cookies. "Need a snack?"

Rosalind had been quite content to ignore the girl, after mentally cataloguing what she looked liked, and was a bit startled at the offer. First a boy rambling on about muffins and then a girl offering her cookies.

"They won't turn me into anything, will they?" But, whatever, she was going to reach for a cookie anyway. "Thanks."

And if it turned her into something... it could only be better than her afternoon at the moment. If she was lucky it would wear off. "Rosalind," she added. Wait. "That's my name, sorry."

"Didi," Didi said. "It's okay, Rosalind. Getting here can be overwhelming to anyone."

Hell, she'd had an overwhelming day herself, and she'd been in Fandom most of a year.

She eyed the cookies dubiously. "I think they're just peanut butter," she said, not snarkily. "Do cookies turn people into other things a lot where you're from?"

"I have be told people can change gender and age and turn into animals," she said direly. "And that the island does it. I still haven't ruled out someone fooling around. There's magic back home that can change people into animals." Frogs. "So it's better to be... safe than sorry."

And that was a weary laugh as she winced. Ow. Headache. Laughing was bad. "Or not. I would almost rather be a frog right now."

It would be easier. And, mmmm, the cookie was actually pretty good.

"Oh," Didi said, matter-of-fact. "Yeah, that stuff happens. Not often, and it wears off, but it does. And my sister just got here. She can make people think they're frogs."

She took a cookie and added, meditatively, "We try to keep her from doing it. So. She, uh, probably couldn't help you."

"I wouldn't go through with it anyway." Just a bit of wishful thinking. She had to be tired if she was speaking of it. "Your sister just got here? Is it easier on the other side of the situation? My sister was already here."

And ten years older than she should've been.

Didi shrugged. "Probably depends on your sister is," she said. "I love Del. I do. But ... she's the baby, and I'm the oldest girl. I have to take care of her. Wasn't expecting it here, you know?"

She took another, tiny bite of cookie. "I don't mind it, but it would have been nice for her to have asked first. Didi you tell your sister?"

Of course, if Delirium asked -- ever -- she wouldn't be Delirium. Dream was the only one to get that kind of courtesy, and Dream got it by demanding it.

"My sister is nine back home," Rosalind said, picking at her cookie. "I told her I was going. I walked through a portal and found another version of my sister here, age nineteen."

She muttered something that sounded a lot like 'this island is going to drive me mad' under her breath.

"It was... a shock." Rosalind still wasn't sure what to make of some of the reactions Elena had had.

"So yours is younger at home but older here?" Didi asked, catching on. "Yikes. I'm ... really, really, really glad I'm a senior."

She shook her head slowly, not daring to think about what she'd do if one of the other five turned up here to teach. "How did your sister take it?"

"Older here and I don't know."

A short huff.

"Actually, I do know. She hugged me then picked a fight that I don't even know how it wound up the way it did." Major miscommunication issues, yes.

"We're two of seven," Didi said, leaning toward Rosalind. "All of us have been in the wrong mood at the wrong time and had something totally innocent turn into a fight. Probably your sister just got flustered and -- took things the wrong way. You're family. You'll work it out."

Because Desire and Dream were totally besties, but that was its own thing.

Rosalind smiled faintly.

"We're not always on the best of terms," she admitted. "I don't know. There was something about it that bothers me. It might just be that suddenly she's older than I am."

Which was a perfectly valid reason to find everything thrown off, yes.

"And she's used to this place and you aren't," Didi said. "So she's older in two ways, kind of. The whole thing is a little weird. Give it a few days and maybe it'll start making sense."

She smiled, also faintly. "I'm worrying about my sister too, but -- I guess it's better she's here than she's somewhere else."

"What's your sister like?" Rosalind asked impulsively. "Besides--making people think they were frogs and things."

"She doesn't do that -- just because it's Tuesday, or anything," Didi said, smiling the tiniest bit as she tried to explain her sister. "Only if she thinks you deserve it. Del is ... creative. Unusual. She can be like a little kid, but, if you press her, she's stronger than you'd expect. She knows things most beings don't know. She wants everyone to be happy. She doesn't give up easily."

"There's some other stuff about our family," she acknowledged, turning to Rosalind more fully, "but it's not really I-met-you-five-minutes-ago conversation. What's yours like?"

"I wasn't expecting deep secrets," she replied, a bit crisply. "My sister... she's stubborn. Impetuous. She never listens no matter what's said to her."

That was... well, that was a family specific thing.

"Not a secret, just something new people sometimes wig about for some reason," Didi shrugged. (Announcing she was Death tended to have that effect.) "Sorry. I'm not trying to be mysterious."

Her smile twitched. "And nothing at all like you, huh?"

"Some similarities," she allowed. "But no, not much alike at all."

Rosalind glanced sideways at her and just shook her head. She didn't want to know what was strange about Didi. Not today.
