BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

So everyone else had, like, dramatic backstories and reasons to show up here and stuff. Which was fine, you know, if you were emotionally in the zone enough to go to those kinda lengths. Denise had just been, you know, chilling with her dad last night watching some hockey guys really pound in on each other - no, seriously, really get into it. One of them broke a rib or something, which was kinda cool.

Then she'd been dropped off at the airport, gotten a ticket stuffed into her hands, and that was that. No reason to get all dramatic and touchy-feely about it.

And now it was Saturday morning and she was on the airport. Sitting around. Chugging water and listening to her discman while watching the kids down the hall, trying to figure out how they were gonna croak. Sure, there was some kind of shuttle supposed to show up, but it wasn't there yet. A girl had to keep herself busy.

She figured the dweebs starting to mill around the terminal were probably classmates or something. Lame.

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

"Gotham City," Tim said. "How about you?"

"Bayville. New York. Most recently, anyway," she clarified. "Gotham City, that's... not someplace I've heard of. Sorry."

"Gotham's not far from New York," Tim said. "I've been to New York City a few times, but I'm not familiar with Bayville. Guess we're even."

"Guess so." It kind of made her feel better, even. "Do you think it'll be a lot different there? Like, Maryland? I kind of got the impression looking at maps that there's not much around there."

Oh yes, she had done research on the area. Not enough. But she'd done some.

"It'll be weird for me, but I'm used to a big city," Tim said. "How big's Bayville?"

"So-so," she said, making a face. "It's not huge, but like, we have our own high school and everything, so it's not tiny. It was quiet-" Um. Kinda. "-but you could still find things to do."

Because she'd lived in a house full of mutants.

"How'd you end up coming here?" Tim asked.

Yeah, she hadn't thought much about that explanation yet. "Time for a change," she said, vaguely. "There was some trouble at my last school, my parents thought it might be better for me to be somewhere else." All technically true. Just still vague. "How about you?"

"I let some kids talk me into doing a really stupid dare and got into huge trouble at home," Tim said. "So, boarding school time."

"Wow." That actually earned a wince from her. "I'd say huge trouble at home might be putting it lightly?"

"Federal marshalls were involved."

"I'm impressed," Kitty said, eyes a little wide. "What'd you do?"

"It's not that impressive, believe me," Tim said. He ran a hand through his hair. "We had an earthquake back home about a year ago and the city took some major damage. Government decided it'd be cheaper to just shut down the worst parts. We call it No Man's Land, now." He shrugged. "And, uh, some guys dared me to sneak in there. I did. I couldn't get back out."

In truth, he'd gone in as Robin to help the people left behind. It figured that his cover story - the one he'd told his dad - was the one that made him look like a total idiot. And it was the one he had to tell the cute girl. Thank you, secret identity.

Wow, phasing really would have helped with that.

"All right, maybe not too impressive, but A for effort?" she tried.

Tim smiled. "I hope the teachers here grade as nicely as you. When my dad found out where I was, he flipped out and sent federal marshalls to get me out. There were news crews everywhere. Gah."
