So everyone else had, like, dramatic backstories and reasons to show up here and stuff. Which was fine, you know, if you were emotionally in the zone enough to go to those kinda lengths. Denise had just been, you know, chilling with her dad last night watching some hockey guys really pound in on each other - no, seriously, really get into it. One of them broke a rib or something, which was kinda cool.

Then she'd been dropped off at the airport, gotten a ticket stuffed into her hands, and that was that. No reason to get all dramatic and touchy-feely about it.

And now it was Saturday morning and she was on the airport. Sitting around. Chugging water and listening to her discman while watching the kids down the hall, trying to figure out how they were gonna croak. Sure, there was some kind of shuttle supposed to show up, but it wasn't there yet. A girl had to keep herself busy.

She figured the dweebs starting to mill around the terminal were probably classmates or something. Lame.

Vance made his way over to the lounge with a couple of suitcases and took a look around. It wasn't quite a superpowered wrestling circuit or a mercenary training camp disguised as a circus, but there was still a certain level of excitement here. And, let's face it, Vance was kind of excited for the chance to catch up with school after the past few months.

He gave a friendly smile to anyone who was paying attention as he found an open seat in the lounge.

Oh look! Friendly smile buddies!

"You going to Fandom, too?" Kitty asked. "Or am I just talking to some random guy who's going to look at me funny now?"

"It takes a lot to get me to look at people funny, don't worry," Vance said. He was friends with an orange rock monster who wore a trenchcoat as a disguise, after all. "I am going to Fandom, though. I'm Vance."

"Kitty," she said, and asked curiously, "Like what would it take?"

"I don't know. If Fin Fang Foom were outside, that would definitely count. It's not every day you see a giant dragon wearing shorts, you know?" Vance asked.

Kitty looked at him blankly.

"...Dragon?"

Nevermind the one in her luggage. That was stuffed.

"Sure. You've never heard of Fin Fang Foom? Iron Man's fought him a few times," Vance said.

Because he was a superhero geek who didn't realize that there were people from other dimensions here.

Oh, Kitty, so woefully from her own little corner of everything. "Who's Iron Man?" she asked. "I have other questions, lots of them, but let's start with that."

Strangely enough, Vance just gave an answer to an earlier question because he was looking at her funny now. "He's the Armored Avenger. One of the founding members of the Avengers, actually. Are... are you not from around here?"

She certainly sounded like she was American. Maybe she was just from a really sheltered, American-sounding part of Europe?

"Bayville, recently. It's by Gotham City, I guess?" Maybe he'd heard of that place. If he wasn't just messing with her. "Don't know what an Avenger is either."

"Gotham City? You mean New York City?" Vance asked. Why, yes, he was getting confused. "And how could anyone not know of the biggest superhero team in the world? You're not just yanking my chain, are you?"

Okay, buh. "Wait a minute- superhero team?"

Something about that made her curious.

"Yeah. Earth's Mightiest Heroes? Led by Captain America, saved the world more times than I could probably count. This isn't ringing a bell at all?" Vance checked.

"First I've heard of it," she said slowly.

And now she had to see what else he knew about. Just to kind of gauge how things were going to go. "So, like, have you ever heard of the X-Men?"

"Of course. They don't really get as much press as the Avengers... well, not good press," Vance said, with a slight eyeroll, "but they've saved the world nearly as many times. It's kind of horrifying to think about how much saving the world needs, really."

Now she was definitely interested. "Wait, what kind of press? Like, more than once?"

It had just been the once, right? They would have noticed if it would have been more than that, right? What with the bigotry and fight-picking?

"Sure. They've been the most famous mutants in the world for years," Vance said. "People seem to talk about Wolverine more than anyone else, though, which I've never completely understood."

Forgive her. There was some massive, massive confusion happening and she hadn't set foot on the shuttle yet.

"Years? Famous for years?"

"You sound so surprised," Vance said. "Yeah, they've changed their rosters a couple times, but it's still the X-Men."

"My head hurts," Kitty said simply. "Like a lot."

"Why's that?" Vance asked.

Hmm. How to handle this. "Well, they're known and everything, but they're kind of like, new. At being out there and known and stuff."

Like really really new.

And that's when it dawned on Vance, who had a rather complicated origin. "... Oh! This has to be an alternate universe thing. Maybe time travel."

"You think we time traveled?" she said, eyebrows raised. "I'm pretty sure I would have noticed that."

"For all I know, it might have been me. Sometimes strange things happen, trust me," Vance said.
