BWI Airport, Portalocity Lounge, Saturday Morning

So everyone else had, like, dramatic backstories and reasons to show up here and stuff. Which was fine, you know, if you were emotionally in the zone enough to go to those kinda lengths. Denise had just been, you know, chilling with her dad last night watching some hockey guys really pound in on each other - no, seriously, really get into it. One of them broke a rib or something, which was kinda cool.

Then she'd been dropped off at the airport, gotten a ticket stuffed into her hands, and that was that. No reason to get all dramatic and touchy-feely about it.

And now it was Saturday morning and she was on the airport. Sitting around. Chugging water and listening to her discman while watching the kids down the hall, trying to figure out how they were gonna croak. Sure, there was some kind of shuttle supposed to show up, but it wasn't there yet. A girl had to keep herself busy.

She figured the dweebs starting to mill around the terminal were probably classmates or something. Lame.

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

"I have one more year to go," Christian said, confirming that he was a student. "I love happy endings when they're earned. This is just -- treacly. You can have a look if you want."

He held the book out to her. "My name is Christian."

She took the book, distracted for a moment by flipping through its pages and reading the back cover.

"So the author cheats?" she said. "Or is it cheap enough that you end up resenting the characters because they always get what they want?"

Said the spoiled rich girl.

"And I'm Rinoa," she added, realizing that that should possibly have gone first.

"That's exactly it," Christian said. "You don't believe they really love each other, only that the author thinks they belong together. And he's a horrid banker, too."

He bowed his head slightly, formally. "A pleasure to meet you, Rinoa."

"Too different, or too alike?" she asked, eyes dancing as she returned his nod with one of her own. "Or are they just as bored to be in the book as you are to read it?"

"Too dull to properly appreciate love anyhow," Christian decided. "But keep the book and tell me what you think. I read it about three times on the ship to America, anyhow."

"I will," she said, taking it and nodding her appreciation. "I'll give you the full report. Do you think dull people can't appreciate love? Maybe they'd appreciate it even more, since they've never had anything that amazing. Like someone who's only ever seen gray discovering color."

She caught that last point and was intrigued. "You came on a ship? Not a portal?"

"Well, I know love colors my world," Christian said, quite serious.

Then: "Of course I cam eon a ship. I don't even know what a portal is -- should I?"

"Good," she said brightly. Love happened to be important. "And no, I don't think so. That's how I got here. I thought maybe all of us did. I seem to be from further away than most of you."
