So everyone else had, like, dramatic backstories and reasons to show up here and stuff. Which was fine, you know, if you were emotionally in the zone enough to go to those kinda lengths. Denise had just been, you know, chilling with her dad last night watching some hockey guys really pound in on each other - no, seriously, really get into it. One of them broke a rib or something, which was kinda cool.

Then she'd been dropped off at the airport, gotten a ticket stuffed into her hands, and that was that. No reason to get all dramatic and touchy-feely about it.

And now it was Saturday morning and she was on the airport. Sitting around. Chugging water and listening to her discman while watching the kids down the hall, trying to figure out how they were gonna croak. Sure, there was some kind of shuttle supposed to show up, but it wasn't there yet. A girl had to keep herself busy.

She figured the dweebs starting to mill around the terminal were probably classmates or something. Lame.

"I am, too," piped up a dark-haired girl sitting off to the side. "Do you think we all are? The crowd's the right age."

"Could be," Tim said. "Hey. I'm Tim, from Gotham City."

"Rinoa Heartilly," she replied, offering him a hand. "From Timber. Deling City before that, but I liked Timber better."

She couldn't place Gotham City. But there had been some strange portal to get here, so maybe that was why.

"I don't know either of those," Tim admitted. "Are they in Virginia?"

"I ... don't know Virginia, either," Rinoa admitted with a laugh. "This might be hopeless."

"I'm guessing you're not from the United States?" Tim asked, trying to place her accent.

"Nope," Rinoa said easily. "Never heard of that one, either. Your turn! Galbadia. Anything?"

Which was all the more confusing, presumably, since her accent would have placed her as a North American otherwise.

North American, but no region he could place. "Nope," Tim said. "Planet Earth?"

That earned him a strange look.

"You named your planet?"

Why? It was just sort of ... there, wasn't it?

"Well, yeah," Tim said. "Why not?"

"Why?" she countered. "Were you going to forget which one you were talking about?"

"You do know there's more than one planet, right?" Tim asked.

"Do people live on the other ones?" she asked.

"Of course," Tim said. "Where do you think Superman came from?"

"Who?" Rinoa shook her head. "Okay, you don't know my people, I don't know yours. But if you've got people on different planets from one another, I guess it could make sense to name them."

"How did you get here?" Tim asked. They were still on Earth, right?

"Portal," she said, tilting her head at him curiously. "Didn't you?"

"Plane," he said. "I took a shuttle flight from Gotham-" He turned to look at the door to the lounge. Pretty smooth teleporter, if it was one, but there had been something odd about it. He'd put it down to exhaustion.
