The Lawn | Noon Onward!

With graduation festivities occurring over the weekend, the school administration expected most of the graduation guests to begin arriving today. To ensure guests felt welcomed, Barney's student council minions had set up a small gathering on the lawn where the guests could arrive, mingle, and feign relaxation before heading off with their graduates.

Or where they could all hear about how George got the makeouts with his girl the night before. Someone was a little chatty while hefting the tables and chairs that would serve guests well for getting a load off after travel, and Barney thought it was a tale worth sharing. For the hungry and forgetful, there were finger foods and nametags spread out on a long table. It was time to get the all-weekend grad party started!

"Oh, it might be cruel to introduce you to them before sending you back to Archenland," Ben replied with a smile. "Basically, a play but on a large screen."

"Like a painting?" Cor wondered, tilting his head.

"But the people move," Ben said. "There's a theater in town. You should make Aravis take you on a date."

"The fruit?" Cor asked, staring at him. "Dates are small. We likely wouldn't both fit. Unless I picked her up, and you know how receptive she'd be to that."

Ben shook his head. "Sorry. It's slang for when a guy and a girl somewhere together."

"Like courting, then?" Cor wondered. "Why is it called that? How odd."

Oh, no. Like he needed another word to bring back to Archenland.

"I don't know," Ben admitted. "I'm not exactly a dating expert."

"I thought Aravis mentioned you had a lady of your own," Cor noted, raising an eyebrow.

Ben blushed. "I do, but my aunt tells me that I'm kind of doing things wrong."

"How?" Cor was concerned. "There's a way to do things wrong? Are you being like Aravis? Are you angry at her over something imaginary? Or perhaps she's doing that. It seems like a thing women do."

"No, Tahiri and I just don't do conventional things together," Ben said with a smile. "We don't dance at dances or go to movies often. We, well, fend off invasions and then go for ice cream."

Now, Cor decided, was not the time to ask what ice cream was. "I'm not sure that sounds as exciting," he said carefully. "I hate dancing at parties."

"Me too!" Ben replied. "Do you sword fight?"

"Mostly with my brother, but yes," Cor said excitedly. "I've been in a battle before!"

So impressive.

"Really?" Ben replied, looking interested. "What were you fighting over?"

Dork.

"Marriage," Cor said simply. "A prince wanted to marry a beautiful queen, but she wouldn't have him. And unfortunately, Archenland lies between the two countries, so they were going to take us in order to get to the queen's land. Aravis is very put out that she couldn't fight, too. Always has been."

"She's got a pretty mean swing, too," Ben said. "You might need to let her have her way on that occasionally."

Cor nodded. "Normally we'dve let her," he said. "She was just hurt that time. But I got her a shield for Christmas. I know better than to make her sit out for being a lady."

Ben grinned. "Good. Especially after her time here, where most of the girls are heavily armed and not afraid to aim whatever they have right at you for trying to call them weaker than men."

"Aravis can knock me down faster than Corin," he agreed. "I'm not a total fool. Thank the Lion she's smaller than me or I'd be doomed."

"And that she likes you," Ben added.

"I certainly hope so. Be a pity if she'd changed her mind by now, wouldn't it?" Cor said, grinning like an idiot.

"I think you're okay," Ben said. "Assuming you brought a suitable graduation gift, of course."

Cor slanted a look at him. "A circlet for court, since she'll be coming home, and a new pair of riding boots. Not for court. Do those work? Is there a tradition I should know about?"

"I'd say to add some chocolate too, but that's what I got her, so no," Ben teased. "That sounds fine."
