"Good afternoon, class." Sophie smiled brightly at Max's students, two boxes of J,GoB's best pastries on the desk behind her, looking completely benign. "I understand you have a Final today. I'm afraid Professor Maximus won't be joining us until the very end, though. He's been unavoidably detained."

By a bottle of tequila, two supermodels and a stripper, and a delayed return-ticket on Portalocity. Bless them.

"So since I don't have access to his final test, I'm afraid you'll have to, mm, 'wing it'. Please write down what you've learned from this class... and then every way you plan on twisting that knowledge to your own advantage in the future."

There. That was a good test of how well they'd understood the concepts.

"After all, it's the applicability that matters, isn't it?"

[class hijacked at the instigation of furious_maximus, who will reappear before the period is over. *bows to him*]

Boy had Max been surprised to find that A) Sophie had headed back to Fandom without him, and B) the return-portal ticket she'd given him wasn't until after his class was almost over.

He'd called Portalocity in a desperate attempt to get new ones (he had worked pretty hard on making that exam difficult, after all), but all he managed to get was hold music.

Really bad hold music.

He did finally make it back. About five minutes before the end of class. His expression suggested that he wasn't sure if he should be angry or amused. Maybe some combination of both...?

Sophie gave him a pleased look when he arrived. Not an innocent look. She knew she couldn't pull that one off.

"Max! You made it back in time. Splendid!"

"Now, now," Sophie chided. "You were having a lovely time. I didn't want to spoil that for you." Her smile widened. "And see? I've given your exam! Wasn't that thoughtful of me?"

"Uh huh. I don't suppose that maybe you were planning something along these lines the entire time?" Max asked. Not that it wasn't blatantly obvious.

"Why would I do that?" Sophie smiled like a cat. "I can't think of a reason."

"You can't, huh?" Max shook his head. "And here I've always thought of you as a woman of great imagination."

"Flattery," Sophie mused. "Do I need a reason? If I'd done this hypothetical thing deliberately, in order to delay you from attending your own Final."

Max opened his mouth to answer, then closed it. "You? Nothing beyond whimsy, I suppose..."

"Precisely." Max was smart. He could figure it out. Sophie didn't need to say any of her half-dozen reasons. "Come, I'll buy you dinner now, to reward your patience. And I promise not to leave you somewhere you're having too much fun."

"I suppose it's too much to hope that you administered the actual exam I prepared, isn't it?" Max sighed.
