Library [4-15]

George had planned to spend all day at the library doing nothing.

It was his downfall to have Beka in the form of a terrier there with him to growl and chew on his pant leg every time he so much as sat down to relax. George was, sadly enough, working.

"... pet or person?" Henry asked, kneeling to offer Beka his fingertips.

He only took a second to marvel that he'd been in Fandom long enough to ask that question casually.

"Person," George said, eyeing Beka. Twas tempting t'claim her as a pet, but he'd probably get bitten. "She's Beka Cooper. Don' try t'slack off around her or she'll bite ye."

Beka pointedly ignore George in order to sniff at the offered fingertips. Pets would be nice. Mmm, pets.

Pets, Henry could provide. "Hi, Beka," he said easily, lightly scratching around the terrier's ears. "I'll consider myself sufficiently warned away from slacking. I need to catch up anyhow. Did you know exams are next week?"

Henry still couldn't fathom quite where the semester had gone.

"Oh, aye, but tisn' like they're a real worry," George said with a shrug. "I mean, none's goin' t'die if we fail 'em." He was profoundly unworried.

Henry glanced up, slightly surprised by the perspective. "Looked at that way, almost nothing at the school matters."

"Helps ye learn more so ye don' die later," he pointed out.

Henry could not argue with that.

"... cheerful," he decided. "How are you, George? Was it a good semester for you?"

George shrugged. He didn't so much expect most t'understand. "T'wasn't a bad one. Seemed like a typical on here. Lots o' weirdness, none of it normal. Y'd think there'd be Gods all over this place bein' curious about it." He made a face. "An' ye? Goin' t'be stayin' on?"

"Yeah, I think they're stuck with me here a while longer," Henry said, head bobbing in a nod. "I'm pretty sure there aren't any mad scientists tucked away anywhere in my library at home. This is interesting."

"Do you mean Gods literally?" he had to ask. "Like, supreme ruler of the universe, gods?"

"Yer library sounds borin' then," George pointed out. He looked surprised at the question. "I dunno which of 'em would claim t'be th' supreme ruler or nothin'. I wouldn' wanna guess. But, aye, there's th'Great Gods like th' Tricksteran' the Great Goddess an' Mithros then all th' littler ones." Son of a Priestess here, yes, well-schooled in the gods.

"Huh," Henry said thoughtfully. "So if I said I wasn't even certain there was a god in my world, I would sound -- completely insane, right?"

"Why?" he asked. "Tisn't one in Kyle's world nor mayhap in Karla's. I dunno what yer world's like."

"I think if I saw them at home all the time, I'd have a harder time with the idea they didn't exist everywhere," Henry said, shaking his head a bit to indicate it didn't matter. "Tricksteran is one of yours, huh?"

"I don' see 'em," George said, raising an eyebrow. "Me mam was a priestess."

"You just said you were surprised they weren't all over the place," Henry pointed out, doing the eyebrow raise thing right back.

"All over th'island," he said. "See why's it so odd. Didn' say nothin' about how it was in Tortall." George shrugged. "Sorry t'confuse ye."

It still felt like something was getting lost to Henry, but he decided to let it go. "It's all right," he said, waving a hand overly magnanimously and giving Beka a final scratch before he rose. "Different worlds can get the best of any of us. Me included."

Don't bother him if he's sleeping.

He wasn't sleeping this week; rather the opposite, in fact, as he seemed to be trying to set a speed record for reshelving, file organizing, and a thousand other tasks large and small.

Either he was thinking about something, or he was trying to make up for some recent procrastination.

I feel like ending the world today, but since the Canucks play tonight, I won't.
