Journalism Class - Thursday October 20

Spider is staring suspiciously at a bowl of cold cereal which is resting on the center of his desk. Beside it sits a box with a goofy looking cartoon character with a large, blue hat. Waiting until his students are mostly settled, he finally looks up to address them.

"We've dealt with a number of shifts in personality, disguises, extreme body modification and outright impersonations since the beginning of the term. A surprisingly small number of people have questioned any of these things or even caught on to them in a timely fashion and I'm becoming somewhat disappointed in the way that you, aspiring journalists, have ceased to question some of these issues. Professor Williams is a very good case in point. Mugged, impersonated...." Spider shook his head sadly. "You're supposed to be journalists, people whose job it is to get to the heart and truth of the matter, not only to expose the truth... but to discover the lies."

He prodded cautiously at the bowl, which continued to do nothing. "Exposing the hidden truth is the very heart of journalism. Reading the subtext, hearing the things which aren't said, learning to pick and choose the things that are true from an interview or investigation are what I'm supposed to be teaching you. I want every student today to make three statements. Two of them should be true, one of them should be false - all should be plausible. I want each student to examine the statements made by the others and decide which is the false statement."

Veronica thinks for a moment and then offers the following.

1. I accused my boyfriend of murder.
2. I was drugged the first time I had sex.
3. I love my mother.

After they've introduced themselves, Beka considers Veronica's statements.

"I don't think #1 is false, because you don't strike me as the sort who would joke about that. Ditto on #2, although, I'm a little less sure, because it's the sort of thing I would never admit in public. #3 seems like a plausible lie. So, I'll say #3 is false."

Veronica is visibly impressed with Beka's reasoning skills.

"You're right."

"I'd ask why you don't love your mother, but we've only just met. So, I'll ask a different presumptuous question. Why'd you tell the class about the sex and the drugs?" Her tone holds warmth, despite the somewhat wry line of questioning. "Feel free to tell me to shove off. I won't be offended."

"I'm not sure really. I guess it was on my mind from Interpersonal Comm class," she answers.

"As for why I don't love my mother, well, that's a long story. I'll tell you all the sordid details sometime over coffee if you're really interested."

Beka nodded. "Funny thing about this school. Stuff just...carries over." With a smile, she cocked her head slightly. "If that's a coffee invitation, sure. I never pass up coffee. Or a good story."

"Is there anyone at this school that doesn't like coffee?"

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
"If so, I haven't met them."

Veronica suddenly remembers something.

"Actually, I have met someone here that doesn't like coffee," she says. "But I would venture a guess that Jake drinks more than enough to make up for that."

She smiles.

"Do you want to go out for coffee Sunday?"

[identity profile] valentine-tart.livejournal.com 2005-10-21 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
"If Jake doesn't, I probably do. I seem to live on the stuff ."

She grins. "Coffee Sunday sounds great. Not too early, though. I have detention on Saturday."

Veronica raises an eyebrow.

"Okay, how about around 2?"

[ooc: we can play whenever irl...]

Beka grimaces. "Long story. I'll tell you on Sunday. Around 2 sounds great."

Angela winces. "I really hope for your sake that one or two is the lie. Um, two is my guess."

[identity profile] marsheadtilt.livejournal.com 2005-10-20 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Veronica shakes her head.

"No, it's actually number three."

"I'm sorry. I mean about all of it," Angela says, hoping like hell it doesn't sound condescending.

Veronica shrugs. She's made her peace with her past. She wonders if Marty has taken her advice and talked to Angela yet, but she doesn't feel like getting into it today.

*Jack listens to Veronica and decides not to guess on this one. Whether he guesses wrong or right bad things could come out of it*
