Horror 101, Monday

Mitchell wasn't... looking quite as collected as usual today. He was leaning against the back of the classroom, and that was that. In the center of the room were a big stack of fairy tale books, most of them European.

"So I gather you're all a bit busy right now," he started, "I thought I'd get something full of horror for the younger ones. And I have fingerpaints. You know."

A beat.

"Encourage your children to write. Or draw. Or do it yourself. Make something scary and show it off. Enjoy the vacation. And remember - this is how most of us start with our horror. As cautionary tales."

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

Vivienne wasn't quite so much for running and glomping strangers, even ones Mommy said were really nice.

She did, however, make her way over to Mitchell. "Mommy said you're Uncle Mitchell," she informed him.

"I'm an uncle now?" Mitchell asked, creasing his forehead. "Took me a while."

He raised his eyebrows at her. "You've got me at a disadvantage," he said, "You know my name, and I haven't the foggiest about yours."

"I'm Vivienne Atreides," she said, with a hint of pride. It was cool to be an Atreides.

"Nice to meet you, Vivienne," Mitchell said, sincerely. "Are you finding everything to your liking?"

"Mommy and Daddy are here," Vivienne shrugged. "Not the ones I have at home, but they're here." Pause. "And the library is nice."

"I wanted to know more about alternate universes," Vivienne said. "I was curious."

About, for example, how any version of Mommy could have a son as irritating as Dani.

"And did you learn anything interesting?" Mitchell asked, raising an eyebrow. Curiously, not like he was humoring her.

"Everything was interesting." Duh. "There can be more alternate universes than anyone can even count."

"Oh, really?" Mitchell said, tipping his head forward. "Have you tried?"

Vivienne gave him a look. A far more polite one than her mother usually did, but still.

"I can't count something I don't know about." Really now, Mitchell. "I only know about three of them."

"Wherever he came from," Vivienne replied, pointing at Dani, who was currently over-using red fingerpaint. Slaying dragons was supposed to be bloody, come on!

He'd gotten some of the paint on his black clothes, too.

Mitchell followed her pointing finger. "Ahhh," he said, getting it. "Family of yours?"

"No." She shook her head. "He's Mommy's son. Or, other-Mommy's." Beat, and slight frown. "Other-other-Mommy's."
