Horror 101, Monday

Mitchell wasn't... looking quite as collected as usual today. He was leaning against the back of the classroom, and that was that. In the center of the room were a big stack of fairy tale books, most of them European.

"So I gather you're all a bit busy right now," he started, "I thought I'd get something full of horror for the younger ones. And I have fingerpaints. You know."

A beat.

"Encourage your children to write. Or draw. Or do it yourself. Make something scary and show it off. Enjoy the vacation. And remember - this is how most of us start with our horror. As cautionary tales."

Annika glanced at Cara hesitantly. "Maybe," she said, hoping it wouldn't sound babyish. "I get to be a princess and ride a pony, right?"

Most things, in Annika's opinion, were better if they involved tiaras and ponies.

"Fairy tales?" Cara scoffed, looking unimpressed. "I'm way past fairy tales in reading comprehension, Mummy. Duh."

"I know you are, that's why we're writing them for Daddy," she answered sweetly. Buuuuuuuuuuurn. "Or I'll help you write a horror story, and Annika can do a fairy tale." Pencils were being handed to each girl, because Emma wasn't going to write it for them, unless they were having trouble with printing.

"Have I told either of you two about the time I saw a real, live unicorn? They're not pretend, and they're not just for little kids."

"When you went to visit Aunt Karla," Annika said. She was starting to carefully draw a wobbly pony on the first page of paper. "I know, Mom. And then you always say we'll visit her sometime but we never do."

"Unicorn?" Cara asked, a little interested in that. "Aren't those fake? Daddy says they're fake. Just like happiness."

"Sometimes Daddy says things that aren't true, just to tease," Emma said, picking up a pencil of her own to try and draw one.

It probably wasn't much better than Annika's pony. Emma wasn't an artist.

"I went to visit your Aunt Karla and stay at her home for a long weekend. I like it there a lot, because there's more people like me. The Blood can do a lot of things besides telepathy, but it's nice to have people around that understand," she said, trying to draw the unicorn's head. "I met a young dragon the size of a pony, and saw real unicorns, an entire herd of them."

"Your Dad's dumb," Annika chimed in. "Being happy isn't fake."

To her mother, she added, "You never told me the dragon part. Were you scared?"

"Daddy is not dumb!" Cara screeched, glaring. "You don't know him, dummy!"
icecoldfrost: (don't need telepathy to know you're dumb)

"Alex isn't dumb, Annika, just... has a very different sense of humor from your Daddy, okay?" Oh lord, there was screeching, and if this turned into a finger-paint fight, she was going to make their fathers deal with it.

"Cara, darling, your Daddy isn't dumb, you know that," she soothed, putting an arm around her shoulders. "He just says mean things that aren't always true, usually to get a rise out of people. Happiness is too real. He makes you happy, doesn't he?"

"Do you two want me to show you the dragons? With my powers?" Please, please, please be easily-distracted children. "It's not quite as nice as being there and feeding a dragon berries, but I can make it close."

"Fine," Annika agreed insincerely and through gritted teeth. It was totally unfair that Mom was paying more attention to Cara than to her. "He's not dumb. Okay?"

She eyed her mother. "You can do it if you want." Though her tone suggested more than that casual level of interest.

"Daddy makes me happy! And he's always right, he said so!" She had to defend her father while also making him wrong. It was what daughters did.

Still, the mean little girl paused at Emma's offer. Cara wanted to be reluctant, she really did but that was just too much resist. "All right. Just this once."

Well, she had to maintain some level of bitchiness.

"Mummy gets to be right sometimes, and this time, she says Daddy is being a dork," Emma replied firmly, offering her other arm to Annika. "But that's okay, because all Daddies are dorks sometimes. We like them anyway."

Except her father, but that was not a topic to be discussed around weetiny ears.

Instead she opened up her memories of the day at Fyreborn Islands, showing both girls the dragons, and herself feeding Frawth. <<You know, Auntie Karla is here too,>> she told them silently. <<I bet you could get her to show you more unicorns and dragons and things.>>

...sorry, Karla.

<<Can we do that after class>>, Annika asked, enthralled. Her bratty edge was entirely lost; she was simply a little girl who liked fairy tales.

<< Daddy doesn't like Aunt Karla >> Cara shared, sounding, for once, like she didn't care. Her father could just eat it where this was concerned.

<<That's because your Daddy can only handle so many talented, telepathic blonde women at a time, and dealing with both of us doesn't leave him any ability to handle Karla and her unicorns,>> Emma giggled. <<I think it hurts his brain.>>
