Horror 101, Monday

Mitchell wasn't... looking quite as collected as usual today. He was leaning against the back of the classroom, and that was that. In the center of the room were a big stack of fairy tale books, most of them European.

"So I gather you're all a bit busy right now," he started, "I thought I'd get something full of horror for the younger ones. And I have fingerpaints. You know."

A beat.

"Encourage your children to write. Or draw. Or do it yourself. Make something scary and show it off. Enjoy the vacation. And remember - this is how most of us start with our horror. As cautionary tales."

While Annika busied herself whining (she seemed to be going for a medal in the activity), Felix settled in with a book of fairytales.

"You didn't want anything else to read?" Jack asked, watching the boy carefully.

He shook his head. "I like these. They're true. And you like it when I want to read in English."

"...all right," Jack said, wondering what the boy meant by 'true' but a little afraid to ask. He'd doodle idly while the boy read.

"Are these yours?" Tony asked Jack.

Jack bobbed his head in a nod. "Annika's mine and Emma's," he confirmed, indicating the blonde girl. "Sebastien and I took Felix in. Passing on a tradition, it seems."

"You didn't have any?"

Tony shook his head. "Not this year. Last year a kid that Ronan and I adopted showed up."

"It's exhausting but interesting," Jack said, then -- making sure Felix wasn't listening -- leaned toward Tony. "Even if the little glimpses of your futures they show you sometimes aren't what you would pick for yourself."

"Yeah," Tony said. "But we don't always get to choose. Looks like you have options, though. Or are they from the same world?"

"Completely different," Jack said. "The girl's from New York and now, more or less, and her mother and I seem to be together. The boy was adopted after the second World War. They only met yesterday."

He rubbed his chin thoughtfully. "They ... haven't tried to kill each other yet."

"Second World War?" Tony shot another glance at Felix, suddenly getting what Jack meant by not what you would pick for yourself. "Oh."

"Oh," Jack agreed, grateful Tony had pieced it together so quickly. "I'm going to worry about it after they go home."

"Yeah, babysitting's enough to deal with," Tony said. "Don't let Jaime look after them, by the way. He'll feed them sugar."

"Annika's definitely not allowed sugar," Jack said with feeling. "I must be tired all the time, in the world where she's real."

Tony snickered. "Is she psychic, too?"

"I don't think she's as strong as Emma is, but she is," Jack said. "She knew Felix was looking for me too."

he grinned back at Tony. "You're laughing at me."

"Only a little," Tony said. "What? Am I not supposed to?"

Jack hesitated. "...I guess I can give you special permission."
