Horror 101, Monday

Mitchell wasn't... looking quite as collected as usual today. He was leaning against the back of the classroom, and that was that. In the center of the room were a big stack of fairy tale books, most of them European.

"So I gather you're all a bit busy right now," he started, "I thought I'd get something full of horror for the younger ones. And I have fingerpaints. You know."

A beat.

"Encourage your children to write. Or draw. Or do it yourself. Make something scary and show it off. Enjoy the vacation. And remember - this is how most of us start with our horror. As cautionary tales."

[[ wait for the ocd up! ]]

Mitchell... didn't quite topple. He might have exaggerated his sway at her glomping a little, though. "Strong grip you've got. And who might you be?"

Vampire-related issues or not, Mitchell was a total pushover for kids.

She giggled up at him. "I'm Kendra Saunders!"

"Hello, Kendra," Mitchell said, grinning. He reached down in hopes of hoisting her up. "You're Chloe's, then?"

She was happy to throw her arms around his neck as she nodded.

"Uh huh. I'm mommy's little ghost whisperer!" She was beaming happily. "I can't make zombies yet, though. Daddy says that happens when you get older. Mommy hopes that never happens to me."

"Well, that is quite a bit of responsibility," Mitchell agreed, holding her up and shooting her a knowing look. "How do you feel about that?"

"I don't want bad people coming after me like they are always coming after Mommy," Kendra said in what to her was whisper. It probably wasn't a whisper. "And zombies can be scary. Mommy doesn't like it when she has to use her zombie powers and it makes her sad."

He reached up to push a few strands of hair away from her forehead. "Like I said, it's a big responsibility," he said, softly. "But it's not yours yet. You can be a kid." A smile flitted across his features. "And your mommy sounds like a strong lady."

She giggled happily. "That's what Aunt Tori says, too. That I'm a kid." She gave him a big grin. "But Mommy isn't a big lady, she's little! Daddy says that Mommy is the tiniest super hero he ever sawed."

"That's how she's super," Mitchell said, seriously. "People will look at her and say she's tiny and stop paying attention. And that's when she strikes." He turned his head towards her again. "Sounds like you've got quite the role model there, Ken."

Mitchell now had Kendra's complete attention. "Whassa role model?"

"Somebody you want to be like when you grow older," Mitchell replied. "Or is there someone else you'd like to be like?"

"Nuh uh," Kendra said, shaking her head. "I want to be just like my Mommy when I growed up. Daddy says she really cares about people and she helps ghosts get sleepy, too."

Ok, what Daddy had said was that Mommy helped lay ghosts to rest. Same thing to Kendra.

"Besides, if I'm like her then the bad guys don't win."

"Some ghosts like being sleepy," Mitchell agreed, his smile broadening. "They get stuck sometimes, roaming about the place."

This wasn't the time to think about Annie too much. "So are you getting ready to fight some bad guys?"

Which he technically was, too. But nevermind.

"Daddy says I'mma too young to fight bad guys yet because little girls should have time to be little girls." She shrugged.

"I'm not asking what your daddy thinks," he said, grinning. "I bet you have quite a left hook on you already. Let's see about that." He reached for her left wrist.

"Silly Mitchell Teacher Person." Kendra giggled at him as she let him take her wrist. "Only pirates have hooks on their hands. I have a hand and sometimes a fist." She leaned in to whisper to him again. "Daddy says all girls should know how to 'fend themselves. I can hit and kick lots."

"But a left hook is kind of a fist," he instructed. "I should know, I'm a teacher. It's a fist you throw at people. Hitting. So come on, let me see you hit the air, now."

Kendra looked around to make sure Chloe wasn't watching and then smiled at Mitchell. She made a fist and swung it at the air.

"Oooh!" Mitchell said, grinning as he fake-dodged out of the way. "You're a fierce one."

Kendra bounced a little in his arms. "Daddy doesn't want me caught guard like Mommy was."

That's off guard, little one.

"He sounds like a smart fellow," Mitchell told him, grinning at her. "What's his name?"

"He's a very smart daddy." Kendra shook her head emphatically. "Nuh uh. Itsa secret that I promised I'd keep if I ever saw blue tunnels that taked me places. I'm good at keeping secrets."

That would be the cause of Chloe's frustration with this whole experience right there.
