Law & Order - Interdimensional Edition: Friday (Week 12)

The students had been handwavily notified to come to the Danger Shop today, and when they did, they would find themselves facing a long row of training dummies.

"It is rare to meet a criminal who is actually willing to be arrested and comes along peacefully," Ziva said. "Sometimes, a small amount of force is necessary in order to take a person into custody - the keyword being small." Using one of the training dummies, Ziva showed the students the pressure points that would incapacitate someone, but not cause them any permanent damage.

"Now, I would like you all to try hitting these dummies in the places I showed you. If you hit the right spot, the area will make a dinging noise and turn green. If you hit a bad spot that would genuinely harm someone, the area will buzz and turn red. Are there any questions?"

Dinah snickered and tapped one point, listening to it ding, on her own dummy. "But what if you don't have rope?" she asked. "C'mon, you're just being too super-strength, that's all."

She stuck out her tongue at her friend, finally hitting the reset. "Having a yo-yo on me at all times means I always have at least a string."

"And knocking them out like this is still a good first step, and you know it," Dinah countered. "Especially since you don't like hurting them. C'moooon." She jabbed at an elbow point, and Momoko's dummy dinged.

"I am totally counting that, you know!" She grinned and tried to make the same move on the other side. It was a bit clumsy but she got a ding. "Yay! But still, it's so weird changing from hard attacks at a distance to hand-to-hand."

"But it might happen, you know. Smaller spaces. Smaller opponents. Not your ideal, I know. But something to be able to handle," Dinah said, grinning at the ding-ding-ding. "See, you're totally capable of this. Ha!"

"Hai sempai! I can't always depend on monsters being in my future, right?" She chuckled as she missed a knee point. "Ah? Missed! Speaking of future, did you hear back from any of those schools yet?"

Dinah hit a pressure point too hard at that question, and lit the dummy up in red light and buzzing. "Ummm..." Her eyes slewed over to her bookbag. "Maybe?"

Momoko did her best not to snicker at the buzz from the neighboring dummy.

"'Maybe'? How can you 'maybe' have heard? Don't they mail you the results here? Or do you still have to go to the school to find out if you made it? I'll go with you if you want!" Can has roadtrip?

Dinah facepalmed. "I got letters. From three. I haven't opened them." She glared at her bag. "Too nervous."

Dinah shook her head, embarrassed. "I know. It's dumb. But until I open them, I could still be going to college. You know?" Or something. Look, they'd gotten more Significant every time she'd tried to open them, until she wanted to find someone with X-Ray vision to read them for her. "... you could look?"

"It's not dumb. I mean, I totally didn't want to read any of the letters from the high schools I applied to before I came here." She took out the last point on her dummy and turned to offer her friend an encouraging grin, ignoring the buzz that said she'd hit that spot a bit too hard. Nothing at all to do with remembering the letters she'd gotten, nope.

"I will if you want! You're sure you wouldn't feel better opening them yourself?"

"Positive," Dinah said in relief, because as nervous as she was, she just wanted this over. So she could call Barbara and tell her she wasn't going. Gah. She headed over to her bookbag, and pulled out two big white envelopes (Gotham University, and SUNY) and a thin one (Princeton). "Here!" Like they were going to burn her fingers.

Momoko hurriedly made her face into a frown and blinked at the envelopes as she took them. "You do know that if the envelope is white, then you totally got denied, right," she teased, shaking her head.

Dinah actually froze for a second, then whapped Momoko on the arm. "Eeeevil. Shush. I'm so wired I'll believe anything. Meanie."

She giggled and waved the three envelopes. "Sooo. have a preference? Or shall we just go with the thin one first?" She glanced at the seal. "'Princeton?'"

"Yeah. Why not. I'm not caring so much about that one." Dinah wiped her palms on her jeans, staring at the envelope. "Go for it."

"Not caring about Princeton?! Is it not a good school in this world?" Momoko glanced up as she tucked the other two under her arm and ripped into the smaller envelope.

She hesitated as she unfolded the letter. "You sure you don't want to sit down or something?"

"Ohhh." Dinah sat down on a desk, her hands twisting together. "It's a good school. A really good one. I just want to go closer to home, and I didn't really think I'd get in."

She scanned the letter as Dinah talked. "Well, technically you didn't." Momoko frowned, taking it personally that they'd turned down her friend. "They're being stupid! They say that you did well, but they can't accept you this term. I don't see why, though." She turned the letter over and checked the envelope.

"Obviously they're not that good of a school if they turned you down. Here, I'm opening the SUNY one next."

"Okay," Dinah said, breathless, feeling a little nauseous. One down. Two to go. See, not so bad? Not with a friend there saying supportive stuff. She gulped and dug her nails into her palms. "...well?"

Momoko liked the look of this one. The seal was much prettier than the stupid Princeton one.

"Okay, hold on! there's a lot of words!" She scanned the letter and quickly saw it was an acceptance so she decided to take pity on the poor girl. "You made it! I knew this was a good school! Ha! Take that stupid Princeton!"

"I made it?" Dinah stared, completely floored. "I made it? Oh my God!" She reached for the letter, blinking, and the light-headed relief made her stomach drop. "I MADE IT!" She glomped Momoko in a delirious hug of glee. "YES!"

"You did! You totally did!" Hugs and bouncing and yay! "I told you! I told you!" Stupid Princeton didn't know what they were missing.

"You did! Oh wow, thank you so much for opening those for me--" Dinah took a moment to spin in place, then laughed. "I'm so relieved, you have no idea. Barbara doesn't have to be embarrassed by me. Yay!" Another spin, and then hugging Momoko again. "Whew. A college wants me. I'm good. I'm okay." She gave the Gotham University one a nervous look. "Maybe we shouldn't even open that one. Quit while I'm ahead?"
