Defense Against the Dark Arts for Muggles [Wednesday]

"I'm sure it hasn't escaped your notice that there's a decidedly unnatural fog outside," Sirius commented from his normal slouched position against a desk. "And as trained Dark Arts instructors, it is part of our job description to be sure you don't do anything irretrievably idiotic against whatever might be lurking inside it."

He was fairly certain he'd seen something with multiple heads as he'd walked over to the school.

"Please do not go out into it unnecessarily," Remus said with a sigh, looking as stern as he could. "As long as the fog's here, don't go out unarmed, if you simply must go out at all. That fog is, as Professor Black said, most definitely not natural. And what do we learn in this class? To treat unnatural things like that with caution."

"And not like things to poke with sticks," Sirius added with a little glare. "Even sticks that are wands. Professor Lupin is an enormous fan of books and libraries and research and so on, which in this sort of situation is dead helpful because rumors and fear leads to stupidity and clinic trips where you have to wait for your bones to grow back after a charm you try goes wrong --" Sirius trailed off. "Anyway. If you'd like, use this class to speak as a group about what you've seen yourself--not what your roommate told you, or what rumor you heard eating breakfast this morning--and see if we can maybe narrow down what the problem outside might be indicating."

"You're also welcome to use this class to talk about any difficulties you may be encountering. We're here to help, as are your classmates," Remus added, glancing at Sirius. "If we can't solve the problem, we can at least treat what it has done by talking about it." He picked up a bag of Chocolate Frogs and added, "They're just chocolate, but that always makes me feel better." He was sure that what was out there was not Dementors -- Sirius hadn't reacted like it, anyway -- but chocolate helped, magical properties or not. "And yes, I do love research. Speculation and gossip isn't usually helpful. Facts are. Know your enemy."

"And remember," Sirius added, "CONSTANT VIGILANCE!"

Mad-Eye Moody would be so proud.

Coming to class today had been Jonas's first exposure to the fog and, after how it'd made him feel, he kind of wanted it to be the last.

Hinata was not slouched in her desk only because years of facing her father's disapproval meant that she very very rarely slouched at all.

But she wasn't smiling and she looked worried.

Dru had made it to class, but the short walk through the fog had her very much NOT looking forward to heading to work afterwards. She was almost tempted to skip out, but she figured she could try and find some information in the books at the store.

"Today was my first day out in it," Jonas shared, looking a little worried. "I didn't see anything because I couldn't. It's so thick, I barely saw my hand in front of my face. It feels like it's just closing in on the island."

Sirius nodded thoughtfully. "It certainly is setting a mood," he replied. "Do you think that might be its purpose?"

"Amongst other things," Jonas said, nodding. "If the radio reports are right, it's certainly setting a mood and acting as a catalyst for a several odd happenings."

"It made me trip out." It was embarrassing to admit, but Kennedy didn't see the point of saving herself face if there was possible risk involved, and the fog being around and as bad as ever today? Definite possible risk. "And I'm not talking just heebie-jeebies. That too, but I mean real mess-with-my-head stuff. Not just out of the corner of my eye, maybe I saw something. Like, 'someone I was talking to a minute ago is suddenly gone and there's a freaking monster in front of me' stuff."

"What did the monster look like?" Sirius asked. "Tall, short, fat, thin, strangely coloured?"

"Like--" She'd been about to say a demon, but that was far too broad and far too specific a definition all at once. "Something with too many heads. Too many limbs. Definitely not human. Almost like one of those crazy-ass things from mythology?"

A beat. "Except kind of on crack."

"Last night I went on the roof and a friend of mine turned into a --" Jack hesitated. It still sounded utterly insane to him, even if radio told him it was all over the island.

"I saw a giant lizard monster instead of her, and she saw some kind of pony creature when she looked at me. We were lucky we came to ourselves before either of us was hurt."

"How long did it take for you to come back to yourselves?" Sirius asked.

Jaqck shrugged. "Not long. The whole thing was a matter of minutes. I still sometimes saw her when I looked at the monster, and when I heard her voice I knew it had to still be her."

He paused a second before continuing. "I still saw the monster, sometimes, until we'd been inside for a bit. But I knew it couldn't be real."

"Some of the monsters are real," she said quietly. "B-But some of what can be seen isn't."

Eyes that could see through things meant that she'd been able to tell what was real and what wasn't. Hinata was not looking forward to heading back to the dorms.

Sirius blinked. "So if we do not fight a monster that we see because we think it might just be our eyes being bewitched, we might be really attacked by some manner of dark creature? That is clever."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2010-03-24 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"That might be the purpose of it," she admitted. "Or it is meant to have us busy fighting things that aren't real while a real monster attacks and, with peoples' senses fogged... it's harder to tell which the real one is. One monster looks much the same as another if you can't think."

Re: Talk to the teachers [03/24]: Sirius

Sirius was putting a dent in Remus's supply of chocolate frogs, but he was also writing down his own impressions of what he'd seen in the fog.

Shhh, Remus's habits were rubbing off on him, yes.
