Library -- Tuesday

The fog was creepy. Creeeeeeeep~y, and every Coralian sense that Anemone had was hissing and spitting and standing on end; it wasn't natural, it wasn't right, and it grated like nails against a chalk board on her skin.

Still, the library was open, coffee on and Anemone pacing the aisles, something slightly... off, in her eyes. The library aide was in... you just might not be talking to the one that's usually on-duty on Tuesdays. At least, not completely.

Please let the rules about food in the library not extend to electronic baby bottles?

Not that Francine, lugging her bookbag, Arthur and Illyria's Ethicsbaby and half a box of doughnuts (shh) couldn't look up stuff about shapeshifting dinosaurs or people who think they see them on her laptop back in the dorms, but the library was nearby after class and had a place to sit. So she could read, take notes and feed said electronic baby before it wailed its way into a coma.

Joolushko had been around the island long enough now to realize that when weird things started happening, there was usually something useful to be found in the library. Of course, Joolushko was of the opinion that libraries were always useful not just in times of crisis. Although, she had no idea what if anything she should be looking for. But there was someone who looked like maybe she had an idea. Maybe.

"Are you looking for anything specific?" she asked.

Francine looked up from her computer screen, not stopping the absent rocking of the droid-baby's bassinette with her elbow because the last time she'd done that it had taken fifteen minutes of walking up and down the hall bouncing him to get the sound to stop.

"I'm looking for stuff about this fog," she said. "It's kind of creepy. Also, hi."

"Hello. It is creepy," Joolushko agreed. "Although I wasn't sure if it qualified as being creepy enough to require research or if it was just regular island creepiness. And I also wasn't even sure where to start looking if it was something that required research. Have you found anything useful?"

Francine gave a shruglike wave of her free hand, that eeeehhhhh maybe gesture. "I dunno. I looked for stuff about unnatural weather and freaking out, 'cause I saw a cashier turn into something in the bakery that I really hope didn't make these doughnuts." She nodded towards the box on the table. "I found a mention of somebody doing a study on airborne hallucinogens, but it was on page full of mean gossip about the guy who wrote it."

Joolushko gave the donuts a wary look. Tainted baked goods would be a terrible waste of sweets.

"That is a place to start at least," she said. "Hallucinogenics and fogs and people that turn into things. A better place to start than 'fog that is creepy'"

"Creepy fog just got me a bunch of Stephen King fansites," Francine admitted.

Joolushko nodded, though she wasn't entirely sure who this King fellow was. The name sounded somewhat familiar at least.

"I suppose I should see if I can come up with anything. And leave you to your robot baby tending."

Francine put a finger to her lips. "Shhhh. He'll get a complex. We don't say the R-word around him."

Francine, when Arthur says trying to be clever doesn't suit you, it's not only true, it's especially true around aliens.

It was a special look that Joolushko was giving Francine right now. A look of 'riiiight, I'll just be over here. Which is far away from there.' "I see."

"Well, he's kind of a traumatized r-word baby," Francine explained. Francine should stop explaining. "His mom tried to eat him."

This was exactly why Joolushko didn't socialize. Humans were all quite mad.

"And you saved him?"
Asking a followup question was a mistake, but Joolushko had been taught it was wise to humor mad people.

Well, his mom was the maddest of the bunch, and she wasn't human. So there.

"His dad did. I'm just babysitting." Probably forever, yes. Shut up.

After a rather unusual encounter on his way to work that morning--which had led to his not going to work after all--Spock had retreated to the school, then decided that some research into possible causes was in order.

Henry noticed the pacing as he went to refill his mug. "Anemone?" he asked. "Everything okay? Book get loose again?"

"The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere the ceremony of innocence is drowned," Henry recited in response as a concerned look crossed his face. "You have Yeats on the brain. Do you need to go home and lie down? I can cover here."

"Okay," Henry said, still looking a little worried. He wasn't about to pry into somebody else's medical problems, so -- "Just take care of yourself. You know how to shout for me if you need help."

He turned away, then paused. "And absolutely no fiddling with special collections today, I don't care if some rough beast slouches back there to be born."

It was good to set boundaries.

"You could let Gulliver out," Henry suggested, eyes flickering to the panduppy. "Or not. I wouldn't even let a cat out into this fog."

Henry tried to put on his I-am-a-reassuring-adult face, though it faltered. He'd been in Fandom long enough that the question got to him -- maybe there were wild things lurking.

Or maybe he'd been in the fantasy section too often.

"It's just some bizarre weather," he said, turning away from the window. "You could close the blinds if it'll help you not to worry about it."

Henry held his breath until she was skipping again. He was pretty good at reading people, at sussing out a danger before it turned into a problem, and for a second there she had looked --

Not dangerous. Not exactly. But very Different.

And then the moment was past.

"Let me know if any of them learn the hula," he said, nonsensically, as he began to meander back toward his office.

He had braved the fog, though he was grateful he had a good sense of direction because he'd almost wandered off the road a few times. Mostly, he spent the day puttering around, ready to help anyone who needed it.
