Business 102: Friday, Period 3, Class 8

"Hey guys. You've almost made it through your first week back from paradise, so congratulations," Jim said. "This week we're talking about everyone's favorite part of working in an office, the supplies. They help you do your work, sure, but they can also keep you from having to buy pens and post its for your home. Because odds are you're going to take them home."

"Now let's go with the office supply rundown. Pens! You use them to write. And your office probably gets better pens than anything you might buy for yourself. Even better, they're usually bought in bulk, so nobody will ever notice that a couple are missing. Markers and highlighters are more of the same, but there probably won't have as many of those lying around, so I wouldn't take too many. Space them out."

"Post Its usually come in big batches of pads, so you can easily sneak a couple of those every now and then. Staples, random paper clips, rubber bands, anything like that, take a few as you need them. You might be able to get away with a couple sheets of paper, but don't think you can take a whole ream. Somebody's going to catch that."

"Most of that stuff you can just slip into a pocket or a purse, which is the key to taking office supplies. It needs to be inconspicuous. If you can't hide it easily, you definitely shouldn't take it."

"But that's not the only reason not to take something. You might be able to get away with taking a stapler, scissors, or tape dispensers, but you're actually going to need them, for one, and people are going to notice when you start asking to borrow those things all the time. And don't think you can just take them from somebody else. That person's going to get mad and they'll eventually start asking questions."

"And things like copiers, phones, or computers? That's not taking office supplies, that's a fireable offense. It might even get you arrested if your boss decides to press charges. Don't take them."

"So, now you know everything you need to know about taking office supplies. Now you have homework for next week: bring a new pen to class next week. If you're not comfortable sneaking a pen from work or your roommate, you can buy one. But that's not really in the spirit of this class."

"Yes, that part was just for Angela."

Jack was taking notes with the same pen he'd been using for weeks; funny thing that it had the Arms hotel logo on it.
