George had asked to swap days and really, it wasn't as if Griff had anything going on that he couldn't do from the comfort of the circulation desk.

Normal work stuff completed quickly, Griff opened up his sketchbook and started drawing. It was really unfortunate how Kemp's face was burned so deeply into Griff's memory that he could've completed the sketch with his eyes closed.

But the library was open!

"Hi, Griff," Henry said on the way to his office, then paused. "You aren't George. Is he lost in Special collections again?"

"Nope, not George," Griff agreed, glancing up from his sketchbook. "Guy had something to do so we swapped out." Normal people might ask the boss if that was okay, but Griff didn't really care.

Normal bosses might care more than Henry did, too. There was a warm, competent body behind the desk and no one was at risk of being eaten by marauding books back in Special Collections. That made for a decent end to his workweek.

He nodded. "Works for me. And, hey, it gives you a normal weekend."

"More like abnormal," Griff answered. "My normal involves being here." It was all about perspective.

"Hadn't thought of it like that," Henry admitted. "Not the bad kind of abnormal, I hope."

Karla came in for lunch as usual, carrying a bag from Luke's and then stopped abruptly when she saw Griff behind the counter. Right gender, right first initial even, but definitely wrong male. "Griff?" she asked. "Hi?"

It was Thursday, right?

"Nice to see you, too," Griff returned, unaware that he was causing such confusion for the girl, but getting that she didn't seem pleased he was there.

Not...displeased. Exactly. Or, at least, not with Griff. "You're working today?"

No, Karla, he was hanging out behind the desk because it was comfy.

Well, this was going wonderfully. Rather than continue to stutter like an idiot, Karla held up the bag. "I brought some lunch. Want to share? There's enough for two."

Actually, since she was one of the two, the bag held enough for at least three.

"Yeah, swapped out with George," Griff said, giving his head a shake as he held up an apple. "I've brought my own, thanks." This was what single boys did, after all. No relying on girls bearing food.

"If you're sure..." Karla said dubiously. In her lexicon, 'apple' did not equate to 'lunch.' "I really don't mind sharing."

Well, she'd missed the parts he'd already consumed, this being his lunch hour. Plus there was that half gallon of coffee he'd had in the morning to consider. "No worries, I've just been snacking while I slack off all day. So, um, you were here for George, right?"

"And the library!" Karla sputtered quickly. "Also to use the library!"

Because they might revoke her library card if she admitted he was her primary reason for visiting. Or something.

Internally facepalming, she called in her few library books and slid them across the counter to be returned. "Thanks. I'll just go then. So you can finish your apple in peace. Yes."
