Magic for Dummies | Class Eight | Period One

"Welcome back, class," Paige said. "I hope you all had an enjoyable spring break. Before break, we learned about making potions. In my world, sometimes a potion isn't enough to vanquish an evil being. Sometimes you also need a spell. Or, there are also times when you only need a spell."

She took a moment to pass out some handouts that listed basic information about spells and a few simple spells that she didn't think would cause any trouble. "If I find out any of you are using these spells outside of class for personal gain or to harm your fellow students, there will be trouble," she warned.

"Sometimes you need a very specific spell," she explained. "And sometimes just a few lines of rhyming verse made up on the spot will suffice. Spells are also used in a variety of other ways, not just for vanquishing evil."

Paige walked over to the whiteboard and wrote out a list of words. "Today we're going to play a word game. I want you to come up with words that rhyme with each other. It doesn't have to be a perfect rhyme, just close enough. You can use any word you want, but I put up a list to get you started. Work in pairs or in groups, whatever you want."

She smiled. "I'm also giving you homework. I want you to write a spell to vanquish a demon that you make up yourself. Next week we'll meet in the Danger Shop and I'll program it so you can try out your spells."

Raven dutifully started working on her own list:

Dwell - bell, swell, shell
Home - tome, roam, dome
Evil - upheaval, medieval, weevil
Fight - light, bright, sprite
Power - flower, hour, tower
Gone - pawn, swan, dawn
Life - rife, wife, strife
Disappear - without fear, crystal clear, a teal deer
Undo - imbue, askew, thank you

Hurley was having trouble, but he tried his best and made a list.

Dwell - Bell. Sell.
Home - Gnome. Comb. Dome.
Evil - . . .
Fight - Bite. Tight. Right.
Power - Sour. Tower. Now-or.
Gone - lawn. Sawn.
Life - Wife. Knife.
Disappear - . . .
Undo - . . .

He didn't have much luck.

Bruce thought this assignment was beneath him. But then again, this was a guy who had actually read the dictionary. All of it. And then he compared Webster to the OED to see where they differed.

There were some years when he was young where he had to train himself in non-violent disciplines and sometimes that involved reading entire dictionaries, okay?

Dwell - belle, knell, quell
Home - chrome, loam, Ohm
Evil - primeval, retrieval, weevil
Fight - blight, trite, Wight
Power - bower, glower, scour
Gone - brawn, fawn, prawn
Life - fife, rife, strife
Disappear - adhere, austere, bandoleer
Undo - adieu, debut, queue

Harper sat and looked at her list of words before jumping in and writing down all the rhymes she could think of.

Power: flower, bower, cower, powder

Harper was around to help, and for once, she was actually good at this kind of thing.

"It rhymed with undo!"

Oh I love them so much. :D
