Library [2-18]

There wasn't a teevee in the library for George to keep up on th'hockey scores so instead he was studying books on hockey drills.

He was really wishing there was a teevee though...

Karla, armed with lunch and armored in one of the Elena- and Emma-approved 'accidentally sexy' outfits, was trying to figure out how to broach the subject of a double-date between them and Beka and Jonas. The problem was, they'd never actually been on a date before (unless the dance counted and look what happened there), and Karla wasn't sure if that was deliberate or not.

So she could go in and suggest the double-date, go in and mention it as hanging out with a group of friends, or stand here and dither.

Dithering should not have been as attractive an option as it was.

"Kiss kiss," she called breezily coming into the library with lunch from Cafe Fina. "I come bearing food!" Nervous? Her? Ha!

Yes

Karla noticed the looking and decided instantly that she was going to buy them both a cake. And possibly write another haiku about how awesome they were.

She did, however, dimple at the compliment. "You sure you're not just saying that to make sure I share?" she teased. She set the bag on the counter and smiled at him. "Not that I object at all, mind."

"Well, I did get a lot, so I suppose I could share," Karla said, trying to sound grudging, even as she beamed a little at the kiss. She leaned over and kissed George back. "It's nice to see you today," she added softly. "I like meeting you for lunch on Thursdays."

Then she ducked a bit and started pulling out the food. "So, I was talking to Beka yesterday," she said, keeping her voice causal.

"How many Beka's are there?" Karla asked, sitting down in the chair he pulled out for her. She raised an eyebrow at his reaction. "You seem a bit surprised."

The grin she gave George was not at all meant to ease his mind.

Hey! She was nervous, too! This was like...putting them on equal footing or something.

"Your name came up," she admitted. And grinned a bit more.

"Does it matter?" Karla asked, impishly.

And then relented. "Yesterday morning. I stopped by to check on Emma and Beka was there, getting ready for work."

Henry got to the library a little late and breathless. He didn't have the excuse of time travel; he'd just overslept.

He nodded a greeting to George -- nice to see he was staying out of Special Collections -- and then busied himself preparing for the staff meeting.

Joan stopped by after her class to see if she could get an interview with the new librarian for the school paper.

Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

"Hello, Mr. DeTamble?" she asked, poking her head into his office.

"That's me," Henry said, glancing up from the stack of paperwork. "Can I help you with something?"

"I'm Joan Girardi," she said. "And I'm on the Fandom High Times staff. We were hoping to do a feature on you for our next issue, if you wouldn't mind answering a few questions."

"Sure, Joan," Henry said, and waved her in. "I can promise I'm not all that interesting."

"Everyone is interesting in Fandom," Joan said, entering the office and finding a seat. She pulled out her notepad and a pen. "It's just a matter of whether they share it or not."

That struck a little close to home, and Henry gave her a careful smile -- one that wondered if she was somehow onto him. "I'm about as dull as anybody you'll find in Fandom," he said. "I'm not from outer space or the distant future. I don't shoot fire out of my fingertips."

No, she wasn't on to him at all. She was simply one of the people who kept her secrets to herself.

She snickered a bit though. "I don't shoot fire from my fingers either, so you have nothing to worry about."

Then, "So, Mr. DeTamble, what brought you to Fandom?"

"Good to hear you won't zap me if I'm a lousy interview," Henry said, and glanced out the window as he decided how to phrase it for print. He usually called it a medical condition, but that was right out this time.

"I'm from Chicago," he started. "I'd been working in a library there ... a little over fifteen years. Anyhow, I had some personal business to take care of that meant I had to be near Baltimore for a while. I started looking for a job, and this was the best open position."

Joan nodded. "How are you adjusting to Fandom and all it's... quirks?"
