DADA for Muggles [period 3, Wednesday]

This time around, programming the Danger Shop had been...well, marginally less difficult, though hardly simple. It was a lucky thing that the students arrived when they did, because had they been five minutes earlier, they might have been treated to hearing some rather colorful language from both their professors.

In any case, it was now a dark, moldering parlor, filled with furniture that had once been ostentatious and was now starting to decay after several decades of disuse.

"Hello!" Remus called, falsely bright because the room...was not so much. "Not every object you encounter is going to present themselves and yell 'Look at me, I do evil things for fun!' Sometimes -- like the boggart -- dark objects and creatures choose to hide in the most ordinary of places. In your media, there's a common enough trope of a 'book of evil' or some such, which when read will place a curse upon all present. These sorts of things are not just stories in many places, though."

Sirius was looking deeply unhappy as he looked around. Ahh, home. How he hadn't missed it. "At home, we have an entire section of our government devoted to bewitched and misused objects." He moved his arms to encompass the room. "Or, as I call them, beloved family heirlooms." The sarcasm was sharp enough to etch something. "On these sheets of parchment," he waved his wand to disperse them, "are the cursed objects in this room you are looking for."

"Gloves are not remotely optional today, unless you aren't particularly attached to your skin," Remus added a bit grimly. "Let us know if you need any help. We're both rather familiar with this place."

Jonas glanced over the parchment while keeping his eyes on his surroundings. This house was really kind of creepy and he could feel the hair on the back of his neck standing on end.

Kennedy liked to think she was pretty tough, but this place was giving her a major wiggins. She was trying to cover up for it by focusing on the list (parchment was trippy, of all the odd things to notice). What the hell was Wartcap Powder? Probably as gross as it sounded.

Even though the setting was different, the concept was something Dru was familiar with. She'd lifted hexes off of several enchanted objects while she was helping her father.

The difficult part of this assignment was that Jonas didn't know what half of these things were so he didn't really know what to look for. That wasn't going to stop him from trying, of course.

Okay, as creepy as this place was, this wasn't that different from doing basic recon, or searching for trap protocols.

Makita had quickly put on her gloves, and grabbed an extra set in case something shredded the ones she was wearing. An incredibly ugly porcelain figure that was most assuredly not on the list was swiped off a shelf, and Makita was using it to carefully prod things that fit the descriptions that they'd been given. Better the little china figure die than her fingers get snapped.

This was like working with Sebastien. Jack's hands were firmly in his pockets as he strolled the room, keen eyes looking for the items in question. Spotting a snuffbox, he used a handkerchief to try to pry it open -- and watched the box snap closed on the handkerchief just as he pulled his fingers out of the way.

Leda certainly didn't mind the gloves, even if it made handling delicate objects a bit harder.

It wasn't enough that this place had the hairs on the back of Warren's neck standing up in a prickle, it had him uncomfortable enough that his feathers were doing much the same. Crammed under his coat as they were, it was making for an all-around unpleasant experience.

It became somewhat less pleasant when he located the spidery thing that was on the list, and it made a lunge at his fingers. He let out a yelp, jumped about three feet into the air, shuffled backward a few steps when his feet found the floor again, and then he worked on breathing.

Sirius was glancing around the room with a very sour expression on his face. He hated his mother's decorating style.

"So what, was the idea to lure intruders into the death drap room? Or was this the room that kids, hopefully, weren't allowed in?"

Sirius snorted. "It was the front parlor. It's where we entertained guests. If you touched things that weren't yours, that was your own fault."

"Did they at least warn the kids, 'don't touch Daddy's snuff box'?" This place was starting to remind her of some of the Unseelie houses she'd heard stories about.

"Of course not," Sirius replied. "You had to learn somehow."

"You could say that," Sirius said wryly. His mother hadn't exactly been the nurturing type.

Leda's foster parents might have been Elf-Bigots, but they weren't quite this bad. If they'd had any such things they'd have been kept under lock and key. With a few kid safe wards around them just in case.

She couldn't think of anything else to say, witty or otherwise so she simply went with a sincere;

"My condolences."
