Library [02/03]

When Sam got to the library today, he didn't waste any time before finding a book and a hiding place among the shelves. His spots were getting embarrassingly worse, and he didn't want to have to talk to anyone if he didn't have to. The fact that anyone who came in could probably follow the smell of chocolate to find him didn't make him feel very secure though.

Claire showed up early today, before her class, because she wanted to talk to Sam.

She was a little puzzled not to find him behind the desk. "Sam?" she called.

Sam didn't respond, hoping that maybe Claire didn't really need help, but when he peered out to look at her, he accidentally knocked a shelf's worth of books to the floor.

Yeah, it was going to be that kind of day.

The noise made her jump, which led to her dropping the hot coffee and hot chocolate she was carrying, burning her hands and making quite a mess.

"Sam!" That whole libraries being quiet places didn't matter at the moment, since she was afraid he was under attack. She found him and looked for a threat. "Are you okay?"

Sam looked up from trying to get the books back in order, and gave Claire a sheepish look. "Uh, yeah. Hi," he said, noticing her hands. "Are you okay?"

"Huh, I'm fine," Claire said, glancing down at her hands and watching the burns heal. "What are you doing over here?"

"Um, just cleaning," Sam said with a nervous laugh. "And maybe hiding a little. I didn't mean to startle you like that, sorry."

"It's okay," she said. "I just thought something was wrong."

She sniffed. "Why does it smell like chocolate over here? Did you spill hot chocolate earlier?"

"Yes?" Sam said quickly, before sighing and shaking his head. "No, it's me. I think the island hates me again."

"Why? What's wrong?" Claire asked. "Are you sick?"

"Kind of?" Sam said, standing up and pulling up his sleeves to show her the spots on his arms. "They itch and I smell funny now." He didn't mean to sound whiny but, well, he itched and smelled funny.

Claire frowned. "You smell like chocolate. I wonder if it has something to do with the dunk tank."

"Yeah, I think I spent too much time in the tank or something," Sam said, sighing. "Are you sure you're okay?" Oh, what he wouldn't give to be able to heal himself right now.

"Do you want to see if my blood can heal it?" she offered. She was still hesitant about trying that, but if it helped Sam...

"Oh, no, that's okay," Sam said, shaking his head as he came out from hiding fully. "Nothing hurts, really. It's just annoying."

"But you'll let me know if it gets worse?" Claire asked.

"Sure," Sam said. "Don't worry about me though. I'm sure this'll all go away once the universe gets over itself or whatever." Ah, resignation, how familiar it felt.

"Sure, I can totally turn off the worrying," Claire said.

"You could try?" Sam suggested, snickering a little. "I've never succeeded, but maybe you could."

That earned him a roll of her eyes. "Hey, I actually stopped to ask you something," she said. "What do you know about that attack on Raven the other night?"

"Just that it happened," Sam said with a frown. "I haven't gotten a chance to talk to her yet. The squirrels said it was a vampire but I haven't noticed any other signs of vampires around here. At least, not anything new."

Claire nodded. "Do you think it's possible it wasn't a vampire?"

"Well, sure. I mean, if all we're going from are bite marks, it could have been anything," Sam said. "She might have bled from being bitten, or gotten hurt in a way the squirrels didn't notice."

"Hmm. Okay," Claire said.

"I haven't heard about anyone else getting attacked. Sure, you should be on your guard, but until we know more, I wouldn't worry more than usual," Sam said.

"I'll be careful," she promised. "And, uh, sorry, but I kinda spilled your coffee when those books fell."
