Library [01/27]

When Sam came into the library today, it didn't take long for him to figure out that he had way too much energy to just sit behind the desk and read. So, he grabbed a chair and went around the library looking for spots to clean that could only be reached by the extremely tall. It wasn't quite as much fun as organizing books (...no, really, that was fun to do) but it gave him a little feeling of accomplishment that he sorely needed after the weekend.

Just don't knock Sam over, please!

You probably shouldn't knock him over here either.

Chuck came in around his usual time and, after placing the bag of food he brought on the front desk, walked over towards the chair Sam was standing on.

"What the hell are you doing?"

Sam looked down at Chuck with a smirk, feeling even taller than him than usual. "It's called cleaning. It's that thing you hire people to do when you want your house to look nice."

"You know I think I've heard of it," he said. "Shouldn't you be in one of those hot uniforms with the short skirt?"

"In your dreams," Sam shot back. "Or, not literally in your dreams, but...you know what I mean."

"I know what you mean," Chuck said. He smirked and poked at Sam's thigh since that's what he was eye level with at the moment. "I don't think you've got the legs for it anyway."

"Hey, my legs are fine," Sam said, crouching down to try to get off of the chair before Chuck could start poking anywhere else.

"Keep telling yourself that," he said. "What are you cleaning for anyway? Libraries are supposed to be dusty and gross. Nerds love that sort of ambiance."

"First of all, if it was gross, no one would want to be in here. And too much dust might damage the books. And the library isn't just for nerds," he added quickly.

"No, you're right," he said. "It's also for people who want to sleep with nerds."

"Or bring food to nerds?" Sam suggested.

"I don't consider this hanging out in a library. It's just me being nice," Chuck said. "Lord knows I'd love it if you worked in a more thrilling place."

"I've worked here for years. I think I might be kind of attached," Sam said, faking a sad look. "If only you worked somewhere, and I could visit you instead."

"Hey, I work somewhere," Chuck said. "You can visit Bass Inc. whenever you want. Granted, it's no more thrilling than the library unless you're interested in real estate. The hotel's fun though."

"Oh yeah? Do you get to do whatever you want there?" Sam asked. Like Chuck didn't get to do whatever he wanted anywhere.

"Of course I do. It's mine," Chuck said. "You could do whatever you wanted there too, you know. Perks of being a friend."

"Somehow, I don't think the limits of what I'd want to do and the limits of what you want to do are close to each other," Sam pointed out.

"Well it's not my fault you're not as adventurous as I am," Chuck said.

"I also have a terrible feeling I'd get you into trouble somehow," Sam said. "Like when we ended up in jail."

Chuck rolled his eyes. "It's impossible for you to do anything that I either haven't done already or couldn't top."

"You're lucky I'm refusing to take that as a challenge," Sam said. "Or, maybe I'm lucky, I'm not sure."

"You'd lose anyway," Chuck said confidently. "You just have to deal with the fact that you're a good person, Sam."

"How is it that I try to be a good person, but when you say it, it sounds like a bad thing?" Sam asked.

"I didn't say anything about it being bad, did I?" Chuck asked. "It's good that you're good. Makes it easy for me to tell what you're going to do."

"So you always know how to stay one step ahead of me?" Sam suggested.

"I'd like to think I don't have to stay a step ahead of you," he said. "I've got to keep an eye on enough people. It's nice to have someone that I don't have to worry about stabbing me in the back or doing something that's going to cause me a lot of headaches."

Which was just proof that even Chuck Bass could be an idiot sometimes.

"It's certainly not my goal to give you a headache, even though I know I probably do sometimes," Sam said. "And no, I won't stab you in the back. Friends don't do that." There might have been an emphasis on friends for Chuck's benefit.

"You'd think that but it's not always the case," he said. "People will do things they normally wouldn't when they're desperate enough."

This may be coming from Chuck's own worry that his uncle might murder him any minute now.

"Anyone who's willing to screw someone over in a desperate moment isn't a very good friend," Sam said. "Which means I wouldn't do it, because I am an awesome friend."

Chuck sort of doubted that but he knew it was no use arguing it. "I suppose I got lucky with my choices in friends then."

Once he pings in!

Henry was in his office, and busily filling out paperwork. The rhythms of it were strangely soothing.

I am so ready for it to snow again this weekend. Bring it on, Mother Nature!
