DADA for Muggles [period 3, Wednesday]

Today Sirius and Remus had managed to wrestle the DVD player (infernal device) into submission for a Informational and Educational Film Experience for the class.

"This was Professor Lupin's idea," Sirius blatantly lied.

Remus gave him a sidelong look, and demurely added, "And the smoke from the DVD player was Professor Black's creative input. We have an ongoing interest in the way witches and wizards are portrayed in Muggle media. Last term, we watched a film about witches." Who were pretty. "This term, we will spend today taking a look at a television program from the early sixties. Not to date myself, but I remember seeing this when I visited my non-magic grandparents." No, Remus, you did date yourself, there.

"In any case, bonus points to anyone who can sucessfully explain why she has to twitch her nose that way and can't just use a wand like the rest of us."

Sirius barked a laugh. "As a final note, next week we will be covering boggarts, creatures from our world which take on the aspect of your greatest fear. Since we learned last term that some of you aren't plagued with just a fear of clowns, if you wish to be excused from the assignment, please see one of us either after class or in our office hours."

Kennedy didn't try too hard to muffle the snicker about the smoke from the DVD player. And then frowned a little at the bit about the boggart. Not because she was worried about it, but-- how was that supposed to work?

For the most part, Jonas has been sticking to books when trying to learn about this world and everything included in it. Now, after seeing this television show (and being amused by it), he wondered if digging archival television footage might not be a bad idea either.

Today, he'd just concentrate on this fictitious (unless this happened on the island) account and enjoy himself. He'd think about educating himself later.

Jack only had half of his mind on the teevee program -- it wasn't exactly demanding entertainment anyhow. The other half of his mind was devoted to thinking about the next week's assignment.

He'd deflected the question about his greatest fear in Mitchell's class with a joke. Having a real fear brought up for his classmates to see ... well. It could be interesting. It could be horrible. But he was inclined to at least go through the exercise.

Makita privately thought any 'kaster that could do a spell without needing to do the math or work an invocation was pretty powerful, so she wasn't going to laugh at the nose-twitching.

She was, however, going to roll her eyes at how dumb all the people in the show were.

Now this was a show Chuck recognised, and could easily settle down to watch. Movie days were awesome.

He was trying not to dwell too much on the assignment for next week. He didn't have a good reason to duck out, as much as he wished he did and it was better not to think about it.

After the class, Warren sort of inched his way toward the teacher that seemed the more approachable of the two, clad in the same heavy coat that he was going to take off eventually, honest, and looking slightly awkward.

"Hey. Uh... Do you have a moment?"

Warren gave Remus a wry sort of smile.

"I think the nose-twitching is just some random idea that people who have no idea how powers actually work must have thought up." He shrugged. "It stands out, if nothing else. But that's not really what I want to talk to you about."

He shifted his weight from one foot to the next, his wings itching under his coat.

"I was curious- And this isn't me asking for permission to sit next class out at all, not really- but... How does this 'boggart' thing work?"

Warren nodded a little as he listened, trying not to look too uneasy about the whole idea.

"Do other people get to see this? Or is this something that's all in my head, when it happens?"

That was the big thing. He was fine with facing down his fears, he'd done it before, even if he was still running from it. But the possibility of showing the class meant that a bunch of smaller worries were going to crop up, too.

"Those are the options, then? Do the assignment in front of the class, or make hats and pretend it isn't happening?"

He wasn't complaining, exactly. It was more as though he was chewing on his options, here.

"I think I want to face mine. I'm just not certain if I'm quite ready for everyone to see, just yet. I mean, a few people already know. People around here seem... really good with what's different. But at the same time, I can't just wear it like a sign for a classroom full of people I hardly know."

"Prior experiences and a lifetime of hiding," Warren agreed, smiling faintly. "Thank you, Professor Lupin. If whatever happens next week isn't something that's going to be on display for everyone else to see, then I'll be looking forward to participating."

A pause. "As much as anyone can ever look forward to potentially having the crap terrified out of them."

Sirius was there too, frowning thoughtfully at the DVD. He could've sworn Darrin had looked different later on...
