Law and Order: Interdimensional Edition - Week Two

Ziva waited somewhat patiently at the front of the room for everyone to sit down before clearing her throat and beginning class.

"Since we discussed the most important skill of an officer last week, I thought it would be best to learn about an officer's second most important skill today. Knowing how to track someone without being caught is really an invaluable skill for anyone, but it is especially important for those who are working in law enforcement. Sometimes, for example, you will need to do surveillance on a suspect to gather evidence to bring to court. Criminals rarely commit crimes when they know they are being watched." And the ones who did were far too crazy to discuss so early in the semester. "You must often be sneaky in order to obtain pictures or video to catch your suspect in the act of their crime. Other times, you will need to be able to follow a suspect in order to apprehend them. If you are noticed and they try to escape, it makes for a much bigger hassle to catch them."

Ziva grabbed a stack of handouts, and passed them out before going over the essential requirements of stealthy following. "If the rest of you have anything to add, feel free to say so," she said, looking to the other teachers who were there. "It is possible that I have forgotten something important."

When the discussion was over, Ziva went back around the room and handed each student a piece of paper. "This is your homework assignment," she said. "Each of you has been given the name of another student in this class. Your assignment is to track this student down at some point before the next class and observe them for at least ten minutes without catching their notice. Having another class with them does not count. You must scout them up--" Out, up, whatever. "--and find them outside of your classes. Does anyone have any questions?"

Momoko had actually listened to part of the radio broadcast last night and was glad to see Dinah was in class.

"Dinah! Are you okay? Well, I mean, I know you are, since they said you went to the clinic and now you're in class." Momoko's arms flailed a bit. "You look horrible!"

Then, in a stern whisper, "You didn't go without me, did you?"

"Nooooo!" Dinah whispered. Then in a normal voice, "Training accident, powers got out of hand. Azula's. Not mine." She sighed. "... do I really look horrible?"

And this OBVIOUSLY meant they wouldn't be going out to Baltimore again for a while. At least until she healed up.

"Well, not like, you were chasing a monster and fell in a trail of slime and slid into a garbage can from a sushi restaurant that was experimenting with dyed rice, levels of horrible." That had never happened to her, but it should be a lesson to all that eating stale Chinese food before bed was not conducive to good dreams. "Just, wow. All bruises and bandages! You also just look sore all over! What kind of training?"

"Good to know," Dinah said, a little weakly, then, "Telekinesis. With water and earth, we've been doing it since September." She gave the back of one hand a rueful look. "Azula lost control of her lightning and blew up a rock. I didn't get out of blast range in time."

Whoa! "You can control lightening?! That's awesome! I didn't know that!"

"Azula can control fire, and she's a really good martial artist." Dinah shook her head. "And I don't know, she wasn't controlling the lightning really great yesterday. Gah."

"Ah! I'm no good at all in actual fighting fighting stuff. That's Kaoru's specialty." Momoko waved away the voice in the back of her head that sounded a LOT like one of Centurion's tactics lectures.

"So how do you train your telekinesis? When you're doing it right and not trying to get an audition for the zombie band at Caritas, I mean?" She tapped lightly at one of Dinah's bandages.

"Visualizing what I want to happen before I do it, and there's gestures that help me focus when it's for water or earth," Dinah said, demonstrating one for making a water-whip. "Professor Atreides worked with me a lot the last couple semesters, so I could concentrate enough to manipulate small stuff, not have it go all over the place. Azula's training was kind of like that." She tilted her head. "You don't have any fighting training at all?" That was worrying.

"Ah! Meditation to help you concentrate? So you really shouldn't bedistracted when you use it, then?" That made sense and was good to know. Momoko filed that away as she tried to make her hands do the same gesture that Dinah had done, but was utterly unable to follow it. "I tried to see if I could get private lessons in magic from one of the teachers. After taking a class in magical forensics? But since there isn't any magic in my world, Professor Lupin said he didn't think I could learn it." Which was totally unfair.

"Mostly I rely on my yo-yo and my strength. And flying. Really, when it came to beating up on people or monsters by hand, that was Kaoru." It was also Kaoru who was always lecturing her to learn some.

"It's gotten better, so I can't be distracted as much," Dinah added. "But yeah, better if I can concentrate... and I've heard that about magic, too. That it's different in every world, so it's hard to learn it if you don't already have it."

She considered what Momoko said. "You know-- if we're going to keep up on our project-- you really need to learn some self-defense moves. I'm probably not as good as Kaoru." Dinah raised her eyebrows at Momoko. "Just in case."

"Well, you did really a cool job with that one... uhm, thing? I threw at you, the other day?" She rapped her knuckles on her own head and gave a wry grin. " Oh! And, uhm. Sorry about that, by the way. I totally forgot and did that on instinct."

She sighed. "I guess I do need to learn, but I'm totally not going back home to ask, since then she'd want to know why I suddenly changed my mind."

"Momoko, that's what this place is for. Learning! Heck, I'll work with you-- well, after I've healed up," Dinah said, looking down at her injuries. Her lips tilted sideways. "And, yeah. It's okay. No doing that thing again without warning, though."

She stuck out her tongue and chuckled. "Hey! To be fair, I didn't know I needed to learn how to fight-fight, so I never asked!" Which was only half true. She'd never thought it was necessary, but she had wondered about it. "Until our project, I mean. Even during the zombies and harpies and stuff, I've done all my fighting in the air like normal."

"You've got two huge advantages. You can fly, and you're super-strong. Oh, and I'd guess super-tough too, to do both." Dinah shook her head. "But there's always, always somebody out there with the same perks, who isn't a good guy." She bit her lip, and said, "I'm asking. And offering. You may never need it, but better safe than sorry."

Momoko grinned. "If you don't make me give up sweets or wake up before dawn or do push-ups in the rain and mud..." Wow, that kind of sounded like one of Centurion's classes. "Then sure! It would be totally irresponsible of me to say no and then let something happen because I wasn't prepared. That's no way to be a hero of Justice. But I can't say how good I'll be." Or how whiny.

"I'll you've got to do is try," Dinah promised. "I'll try to make it fun. And there's other girls who are beginners too. You might have fun practicing with them." She grinned. "And no mud! Except for mudfights!"

"Deal!" Momoko held out her hand, grinning. "Although, no throwing lightening at me! Or rocks. Redheads don't look as good in black and blue as blondes do!"

Dinah shook her hand, laughing. "Deal! Complete and total deal." And she'd be doubly careful with Momoko, now that she thoght of it, because of that.
