Law and Order: Interdimensional Edition - Week Two

Ziva waited somewhat patiently at the front of the room for everyone to sit down before clearing her throat and beginning class.

"Since we discussed the most important skill of an officer last week, I thought it would be best to learn about an officer's second most important skill today. Knowing how to track someone without being caught is really an invaluable skill for anyone, but it is especially important for those who are working in law enforcement. Sometimes, for example, you will need to do surveillance on a suspect to gather evidence to bring to court. Criminals rarely commit crimes when they know they are being watched." And the ones who did were far too crazy to discuss so early in the semester. "You must often be sneaky in order to obtain pictures or video to catch your suspect in the act of their crime. Other times, you will need to be able to follow a suspect in order to apprehend them. If you are noticed and they try to escape, it makes for a much bigger hassle to catch them."

Ziva grabbed a stack of handouts, and passed them out before going over the essential requirements of stealthy following. "If the rest of you have anything to add, feel free to say so," she said, looking to the other teachers who were there. "It is possible that I have forgotten something important."

When the discussion was over, Ziva went back around the room and handed each student a piece of paper. "This is your homework assignment," she said. "Each of you has been given the name of another student in this class. Your assignment is to track this student down at some point before the next class and observe them for at least ten minutes without catching their notice. Having another class with them does not count. You must scout them up--" Out, up, whatever. "--and find them outside of your classes. Does anyone have any questions?"

Roy stared at her some more, waiting for her to make sense. "You were sparring without a spotter?" he asked, the same way one might say 'you were skydiving without a parachute?'.

Dinah frowned at him, then said, "Not something you do, hunh?" Not something she'd ever thought of, because the gym was in the dorms, and the Fight Club was full of teachers, and it's not like anyone else had suggested it before. Said like that, and knowing Azula, it now seemed... dumb. She turned even more red and looked away.

"Not really," Roy said. "Because then someone flips out and--and did you say she was throwing lightning?"

"Well, usually they're not supposed to flip out..." Dinah paused, thinking of a couple other people, and said, "Although in retrospect that sounds like a great idea, especially with Azula, and yeah. She's a firebender, and we had a rule, no fire, no knives." And Dinah wouldn't dunk her in the ocean again, so as to avoid further nuclear reactions. "She wasn't aiming it at me, she was aiming it at the boulder to the left of me." Dinah looked down at her hands, still embarrassed. Maybe she should have known better, should have expected it. But it'd been months since that last temper tantrum of Azula's. "And it got outta control."

Roy thought about that. "Okay, no fire so she used lightning?" That was like if he couldn't use arrows so he whipped out a rocket launcher, he thought. "And it got out of control. The lightning."

"Yeah." Dinah found herself getting pissed off again. "I think she was mad I got a hit in with the water, on her face-- I didn't know it could bruise like that-- so she decided to show off. She admitted the lightning got away from her when we were at the clinic afterward." She frowned. "Although I'm still not clear what it was supposed to do if it'd worked."

Roy wondered if Dinah had ever bellyflopped into a pool, because ow. "Maybe you should ask her about that..."

"Yeah. Well, I did. But she didn't really explain, and I was too mad to keep asking." Dinah looked down at her arms, then sighed. "So, yeah." She was thinking over what Roy had said about a spotter, considering that if she did go through with more training, it would be a good idea. "I don't know. I'm trying to think of what it'd take to feel okay about training with her again. She's good at the letter of promises." The spirit-- enh.

"Yeah, sounds like it," Roy said. "I would. I mean, I can't tell you what to do, but I'd be careful."

Dinah quirked a smile at him, and shrugged, then nodded. "I have to get past pissed off and embarrassed, then ask some questions. Then we'll see, I guess."

Dinah held out her arms to consider them, and said, "Point. Simon said it'd be a week before I should try any more fighting. If I didn't hurt all over, I'd go stir crazy."

A week? Roy hadn't punched anything since November. "You can do things other than fighting for a week, y'know?"

"Well, sure. Run. Climb. Dance. Air-walk." Dinah frowned, and said, "Well, I can still air-walk, maybe? And dance." She grinned. "Video games! Bobby and I were going to have a tournament this weekend. As long as it doesn't give me a headache."

"Do you have a concussion?" Roy asked, worried. "You have to be careful with a concussion. Should you even be here?"

Just because you used a concussion as an excuse to blow off school doesn't mean everyone does, Roy.

"A mild one," Dinah said, shrugging. "My ribs hurt more than my head. And this is the only class I've got today. I'll probably take another nap, after."

"We loooooove them." Dinah smiled. "I'm going to do that a lot this weekend, hopefully be ready for action soon!"

She was so bouncy. Had Roy ever been that bouncy? "There's not exactly a lot of action around here, so...y'know, don't rush yourself."

"No worries. I don't want to sabotage myself." Dinah smiled at him, then stepped on a frown, thinking of Thursday's broadcast. "You doing good? Everything else going okay?"

"Everything's fine." Roy still had no idea about the radio, since the only mention he'd heard of it was something that Emma girl said in the middle of freaking out at him. So, yeah, no clue.

"Cool." Dinah was so not going to be the first to enlighten him there. And she wanted to have a little talk with Emma now, and hey, did Roy need to know that? Nah. She took a bite of her muffin, and smiled. "Come by for video games and Alfred cookies if you have time this weekend."
exspeedydotcom: (heck yeah I rule)
