Jonothon was not feeling entirely too amused as he made his way into the library today for his shift, why?

Okay, perhaps a little...

Okay, he was practically radiating a psionic wave of amusement as he opened the library and set to work shelving books. Wrong numbers very nearly made his inability to use telephones forgivable.

In which Jonothon puts books on shelves and puts forth his best effort to keep from projecting a psionic laugh every time he thinks of certain phone messages.

"Morning, Jono," Henry said, blissfully ignorant of Certain Phone Messages. He tried to get a look at what Jono was reshelving. "Good weekend?"

//Well, I've got no reason to complain,// Jono replied, pleasantly enough as he stuck a self-help book back onto the shelf.

Look, it was totally just happy coincidence and he'd thank anyone who noticed to let him do his work instead of assuming that he'd been reading it.

Even if he had.

//I can't say th'same for most of the rest of the island, I suppose. I think th'phones were a little buggered up, yesterday. Made for some interesting unexpected messages on my answerphone.//

"I had one of those," Henry said, managing not to smirk at the self-help title. It could be a coincidence, and he'd read worse things while he was working. "Some British lady talking about slap chops. Didn't make any sense."

//I'm sure that yer going to learn soon enough that around here, sense is completely overrated.// Jono stood up once the book was away, grabbed the bottom corners of his jacket, and gave it a good tug to straighten it out again. //I had Merlin- Yes, that Merlin- callin' to let me know that he didn't fancy my breasts.//

Jono hadn't been terribly heartbroken at that revelation. You could tell.

"Merlin-yes-that-Merlin," Henry repeated, nodding dutifully and filing that away as something to think about later. He clapped a hand on Jono's shoulder, trying not to smile. "It's all right, Starsmore. I'm sure you have many other worthwhile attributes to catch a fellow's eye."

Jono allowed himself to look almost dutifully amused that that statement.

//Yes, that other bloke who called wanted to know if I was willing to go at it with him in public. I had to come up with a creative way to respectfully turn him down.//

By hitting buttons. It had been a very scientific approach, really.

"Now I'm horribly curious what you did," Henry said.

//I spelled out 'plonker' on the answerphone using the digits on my phone,// Jono shared. //Though I've got my doubts that he ever actually got it. Knowing my luck, it managed to completely miss th'mark.//

A pause. And a shrug.

//Not that anybody would be able to figure out what th'hell those beeps were meant to mean, anyhow. But it was vaguely satisfying at th'time.//

"It was creative," Henry said approvingly. "And you never know. Maybe it went to someone who had a good enough ear to match the tones to the numbers and absolutely nothing else to do."

//Just imagine, all that time spent picking out every possible combination of letters, only to realize that they wasted all of that time just so that they could know that some British git was calling to insult them in code.//

Well, Jono liked the notion, anyhow. He hesitated for a moment, before piping up again. Because he couldn't let this one sit forever.

//By th'way, mate, yer might want to consider givin' yer wife another call.//

Henry blinked several times and then went crimson even against his slight sunburn as he pieced it together. He hadn't quite been in a phone sex mood when he'd called, but it had been, ahem, enthusiastic.

Oops.

"You got that one, too?" he said sheepishly. "I'm going to assume you're shocked and appalled at the contents."

He would have been, at 16. Adults having sex? That was wrong.

"I figured she was just busy."

At 18, Jono was more amused, less shocked and appalled. And you could absolutely tell by the expression that wasn't quite a grin as he replied to Henry, yes.

//Shocked and utterly appalled, yes. It might take me months to overcome the trauma.//

He was over it.

"I'll reimburse you for the extra therapy sessions," Henry averred, oh so seriously.

"The phones don't do that all the time, do they?"

//This would be th'first time they've done it since I got here,// Jono replied. //Granted, I've only been here a semester, myself. And I've heard that this island likes to revisit the mischief that it finds th'most amusing, so I wouldn't go and assume that yer in th'clear quite yet, mate.//

Jono was helpful! Yay!

"As if a place where the library has a room of attacking books could ever put me in the clear," Henry said, a smile crinkling the corners of his eyes. "Thank you for the heads up, though."

In which Jonothon fails to eat.

In which Jonothon has mellowed out somewhat, but he's still in a relatively decent frame of mind.

Weird.

In which Henry will have to ping in, if you wish to do so.

Henry was, indeed, in his office, and ordering books for Cindy's class. She had an interesting syllabus.

In which I keep all of the OCD from falling out, thus saving the world.
