It was Dan's first day in the library and he was just as nervous and excited as you would imagine a spastic geek like him would be. After spending a couple of minutes getting to know the place, he sat behind the front desk with a book and a cup of coffee, ready to help people in any way he could.

Officially speaking, today was Henry's day off, and he'd have to leave pretty early in the day to go to Baltimore for the fun of convincing another new set of doctors that he wasn't crazy anyhow.

But he figured he'd met five of the aides, and it would behoove him to meet the last two. So he walked through the light snow to the library early in the day. "Hi," he said to the young man behind the counter. "I'm Henry. I seem to be the librarian."

Dan was a little thrown off by the "seem" part of that sentence but if that was going to be the weirdest part of this conversation then he'd consider himself lucky. "I'm Dan. It's nice to meet you."

"Definitely," Henry agreed, and, yes, the seem was likely to be the oddest part unless you started him on time travel or special collections. "How are you getting settled in? Did you find everything okay? I've only been here most of a week myself, but I'm starting to get my arms around the place."

"Yeah, everything seems to be easy enough to find," Dan said. "I've spent a lot of time in libraries so I tend to find my way around them quickly."

Henry perked up at that. "Oh, did you work in one at home?" he asked. "Or are you just a fan?"

"Just a fan," he said. "I grew up with the New York Public Library so I've been kind of spoiled when it comes to awesome places to get books."

Henry slurped from his everpresent mug of coffee. "Ah. I was in the Newberry in Chicago for about 15 years before I came here. It's a lot better than I expected a high school library to be, I'll tell you that much. You might be surprised by how it stacks up to NYC."

"I'm not disappointed so far," he said. "I haven't checked out the special collections yet. It looks kind of um...foreboding."

And, yes, Dan knew how ridiculous that sounded.

"Oh, I didn't tell you the Special Collections rules," Henry said, not thinking Dan sounded at all ridiculous. "We don't go in. If we have to, we take a snack and a weapon and wear shoes we can run in. Or we leave whatever-it-is until Anemone's shift. She sounds like she knows how to handle it."

... and now the 'seem' bit was officially not the strangest thing he'd said today.

Dan didn't even know why he expected to have a normal conversation, he really didn't. "...okay then. I'll just...keep clear. I'm not all that good with weapons."

"Not exactly my area of specialty either," Henry reassured him. "Sorry. The time I went in, we brought Oreos, and the books swooped down to get them. They're kind of vicious. So ... yeah. We stay clear."

"I can do that, trust me," Dan said. "I'm kind of a stickler for the rules."

Suck uuuuuup.

Henry noticed the suck-up-iness, but it wasn't something he was going to discourage in an employee.

"Good," he said. "I'm not usually around Fridays, so ... it's good to know I can trust you not to break the library."

Cindy managed to find the library without too much of a mishap. As a spy with several centuries of training under her belt, she should've been less proud of herself than she was, but a week at Fandom had already suggested this place was as crazy as the bottom of the Witching Well.

"Are you Dan?" she asked as she came in.

"That's me," he said. Dan will never not be surprised when people knew his name. He was a little too used to being invisible back in New York. "Can I help you with something?"

Cindy smiled at him. It was one of the easiest ways to make teen boys helpful. "Yes, I talked to Mr. DeTamble today during the staff meeting," she said, walking to the desk and sliding over the reading list for her class. "He asked me to get this to him, but if he wasn't in the library, I should leave it with Dan, who could be trusted to make sure he got it next time he was in."

Flattery was another, yes.

"I can totally do that," Dan said. He was extremely dedicated to any work he did so he would have done whatever anybody told him, pretty lady or not. "You're a teacher here?"

"I am," Cindy said. "New this semester. I teach Monomyths. And yourself? Student, I'm guessing."

"Yeah, sophomore," he said, nodding. "Brand new student as well. Just got here over the weekend."

"You and me both," Cindy said, giving him another smile. "Best of luck in your studies then--I hear tell we get used to the craziness in time."

Man, its snowing a lot outside right now.
